THE RACES, The Annual Races came off on Boxing Day, and were highly successful. The site of;the Course was in the South Bay, and the situation splendid, the hill by which it is partly surrounded, affording an excellent view, and forming a natural amphitheatre as it were. The length is somewhat, limited, being but a mils in extent, but with a few improvements might be made a yery fair one. Refreshment booths were erected on the ground by Messrs. Clarke and Evans. The attendance was very considerable, and the races, quits met the expectations of everyone present, and. some splendid'running.took plac-i. There were six events as follows ;

The opening race was the Kaikoura Cup Df eight sovs. Three ran. The stake was won by Mr. Evans’ Kaikoura Maid. Mr. Ward’s Black Prince running second, and Mr. Wharton’s Alabama making a bad third. The Ladies Purse of eight sovs. was won by Mr. Lovell’s Flying Buck, Mr. Ward’s Black Prince coming in second, Mr Inglis’s Cocksfoot 0, Mr Wharton’s Butterfly 0. The Pony Race for eight sovs. was won by Mr. Muller’s Tantivy, (otherwise Tom,) Lynch’s Blazeaway second, Mr Mario’s Friday, Mr. H. Lovell’s Wild Irishman, and Mr. Inglis’s Pickwick. The Hurdle Race for nine sovs. was carried' off by Mr. Muller’s Tantivy, Mr, Workman’s Native Talent second, Mr. Inglis’s Poctasakes, Mr Lovell’s Wild Irishman, and Mr. Charleston’s Chestnut Filly bringing up the rear. The Consolation Stakes of six sovs. was run for by Mr. Ashbolt’s Old Peter, and Mr Ward’s Black Prince, the former won. There was a smart race of half a mile between Mr. Evans’ Kaikoura Maid, and Mr. Wharton’s Alabama for £6 which was won by the former. The proceedings attracted a numerous attendance, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, the greatest order prevailed, and everything passed off most satisfactorily. The stewards were Messrs. A. W. Ingles, H. Ingles, and T. Dickenson. Mr. Muller was Clerk of the Course. A Match for £3O aside between Venture and Alabama is fixed to come off in one month, but so far Venture remains the favorite. We may notice that Messrs. Marks and Harris from Picton, are about to erect a large store here, and commence business as wholesale storekeepers and commission agents. Two vessels have lately arrived, carrying timber andgeneral stores forthem. The Marine Survey party are still busily engaged here. We understand that after completing the • survey of this harbour, they leave for Gore Bay.
