LINDHURST ROAD BOARD.
(From the 'Times') A meeting of this Board was held oti Friday and was attended by Messrs Kinross (chairman), Strang, Cameron, Millar, Mutch, Irvine, Farr and Fleming. A letter from the late Chief Com missioner of Crown Lands was read relative to a road deviation the Board had asked for through sections 25, 29, 28 and 27, block IV, Mabel Hundred, ihe Ohivf Commissioner said the Board seemrd to think that the main purpose for which Crown Lands existed was that they might be niuti* latfd by Road Boards. The reading of the letter caused much amusement -' but on referring to the map it was discovered that the Board's request had been completely misunderstood with regard to locality, and Mr Millar was rrqm-sted to wait upon. the present Chief Conurriij<sionrr and explain the matter. The Colonial Treasurer wrote saying that the Board's representations on the matter of the withdrawal of subsidies from local bodits would receive consideration. The Mataura Town Board complained that certain sections at the mouth of the Waimumu flood channel, and partly within the Town Board district, were inf. »t.ed with rabbits, which were a source of annoyance to nei«hbors. These sections had been reserved from sale at the request of the Koad Board, and the Town Board wishrtd to know whether tln»y would consent to their being sold. Mr Cameron explained that th* sections were chiefly sand and shingle, not worth much, and had been rrserved to prevent claims for damage arising as they were subject to overflow at every flood. He thought thpy should still be reserved. — A.greed to. C. S. Booth asked for some grarolling to be done on a swamp between sections 1 and 24, "Waimumu to Gore road. — To be informed that the matter is being attended to. The clerk tabled a number of letters from ratepayers complaining, on various grounds, of the amounts of, assessment. Most of the complaints referred to rates long overdue. The clerk explained that under the present method of rating, the writers had had no opportunity of appeal, and he wished the Board's advice before forcing payment. Mr Fleming thought it would be manifestly unfair to those who had already paid thtir rates were aednctions made on valuations now, except in very exceptional cases where glaring errors might appear. lie thought the assessment all round was high, but it was pretty uniform, and so long as that was so no one suffered any injury. The Board decided to consider the letters and dsal with thvm. on the principle suggested. Ibey were then carefully gone through, and a few alterations made in cases where mistake was evident. Some cases were left to the subdivision committees for iuvestigation. The clerk intimated that the amounts paid into the sinking fund to date were as follows : — Myrosi, L136 ; Mabel L76 ; Waimumu, Llos— Total, L316, including interest accrued. On the motion of Mr Cameron ic was resolved to ask the County Council for a subsidy of Ll2O for the road from Charkon Creek to Hokonui.
