DOG TAX.

*__ , TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l see in your paper to-day a report o£ a case against Mr Joseph Jenkins for having, an unregistered dog in his possession, and the report says : " Mr Johnston, who appeared on behalf of the County Council, stated that the real question at issue was whether the County Council or the Gorfc Town Board were entitled to the dog rates." This *s altogether incorrect : there is no question between the County Council and the Gore Town Board as to these rates. This is evident from the enclosed copy letter sent to the County Treasurer on 10th July last, to which no reply has been received ; and the County Council gave the local Board no notice of this action, neither did the name, of the Council or the Board appear on the face of the proceedings in Court. Your report must be taken for an election squib, as any collision between the several Town Boards and the County Council would lead to an evasion of the tax and be suicidal to both.—Yours, &c, Arch. Fletcher, Town Clerk. Gore, 4th Nov., 1884.

E. P. MacGoun, Esq., Clerk and Treasurer, Southland County Council, Invercargill. Sir, —l refer you to the annexed excerpt from the last minute of meeting of the Grdre Town Board. —l am, &c, Arch. Fletcher, Town Clerk. Letter from the County Council, 16th June re dog tax : Mr Beattie moved and Mr Heherr seconded, That the County Council be informed that their collector had received taxes in the town district; that on these being refunded to the Town Board an adjustment of accounts would take place, and further that the letter of their clerk was most uncalled for in so far as the caution therein.contained was concerned. Carried.
