(From our own correspondent.) The uomination of a member for the Waikaia riding of lhe county took place on Wednesday at tho Courthouse, the returning officer, Mr W. Braithvvaite, presiding. Mr James Handysidc proposed M>* 0. G. VV. Hast as a fit and proper person to represent the constituency in the Council This was seconded by Mr J. Davies. Both gentlemen spoke in high terms of the energetic manner in which Mr Hast has attended to the interests of the riding. There being no other candidate, Mr Hast was declared duly elected. On Monday next the local club play % match at cricket with the Lumsdcn eleven. In the evening a concert and ball in aid o£ the cemetery funds will be held in Bell's Hall. A party of Chinamen jire now working the claim owned for some years by Wilkic and Co. on the Wiuding Creek. This claim originally produced fair results, but of latQ the proprietors have met with but poor success in spite of praiseworthy perseverance. Kennedy and Co. are prospecting in the same locality, but up to the present have not succeeded in striking anything payable. We arc getting very changeable weather, and]the crops are very backward — in many cases fully a month later* than last spring. Fruit promises to be abundant, should >ye be fortunate enough to escape late frosts.
