TROUBLE BETWEEN CHINA AND FRANCIS.
- . » Hong Kong, Nov. 24. — lntellijenc* to hand from Canton shows that active preparations, in view of an outbreak of war with France, are being "made without cessation in that city, and that the Imperial troops are now being massed there. The threatening attitu 'c of the natives towards the European residents has* not in any way subsided. It has transpired that relations of a satisfactory J character exist between- the Chinese Govern- Mk ment and the Black Flags, and that a secret v^| treaty, the terms of which,are not however known, has been.- concluded between- the two nations. It is now considered that an outbreak of ' hostilities' between France and China is inevitable, and that an open declaration k of war will not be delayed for any * length of time. ' Reports to hand from Tonquin state, that the Chinese troops have already assumed the offensive, and that a force of three (hbusand attacked the, French position At Haid2snong(#Ja)t but ; retixed after seven hours' fighting. Great anxiety and alarm at the serions aspect of affairs .is felt by the Europeans in China. *■ I
