The letter from J. E. Humphries asking, that the reserve along the Waimumu be opened for traffic was again held over, the map of the district not having come to hand.
Captain Mackenzie. M.H.R., wrote asking if there was any possibility of finding itone as suitable for railway purposes at that now being quarried on the reserve without crossing the river ; also, if the Board would care to get the remainder of the reserve vested after the Railway Department had taken what stone they required. — Mr Cameron moved that the eaptniu bu informed that the pertion of the reserve being worked by the department was what the Board particularly desired, and that without that there would be no possibility of erecting factories, &c. The mover said a gr«at fuss had been made in the House about the value of ihe reserve, •and it sesmed strange the (xoveniinent had never appreciated this until apprised of it by the Board, who he considered qui.e competent to take charge of it. Mr Humphries seconded the motion, which, was agreed to.
Mr v* l . x pryde i 1 wrote, pointing out that though the leasing of sections 9 and 10, block ill, there was no available road for drays to the section below ; but one could be provided at a small expenditure.— Referred to the
engineer. Messrs Balneaves, McKcchnie and Co. applied for the right to put gates along the reserTe at tke Wairaamu stream, there being no defined road line.— There waa some iuoliuaiion to again hold this matter over, but Mr Allison objected to these repeated delays, and moved that the engineer be instructed at once to peg off ihe reserve between Elliot's road aud the top corner of section 3, Lindhurst, and that Balneaves, McKechnie and Co. be allowed to put gates on tke reserve till the survey was handed in to tke Board.~r. Mr Connor seconded the motion, holding that it would tend to bring the thing to a close. — Carried.
The Southland County Council intimated by letter that its enginneer was attending to the work re culverts opposite Stark's.
Mr Henderson's account, Al6 15s, for legal work in connection with the Mataura Reserve Vestiug and Empowering Bill was reluctantly passed for payment.
The chairman (Mr Winning) iaid that i since last meeting it had been reported tha ; . the lessee of one of the municipal seotions had removed the fences from his land, the j lease of which had just expired. He (the chairman) d«ubted whether he had power to do this, and moved that legal advice be obtained and if necessary proceedings taken' 1 against the offending party.— Mr Cameron seconded the motion, which was agreed to. I
Mr C. Humphries aaked that some repair* should be executed to streets near the school, but it was agreed to hold this over till the engineer could visit the spot and report. It was also resolved to hold a special meeting on Wednesday week to consider what works were necessary in the town.
The chairman regretted that ha had not been present in the early part of the evening , when the application of Balneaves, McKcchnie and Co. was discmsed. He thought that if the engineer was instructed to peg off the boundary along the Waimumu a dangerous precedent would be established, because it was not the Board* duty to point out boundary lines. He would more at n«xt meeting that the resolution be rescinded, in order that the matter might again bo discuasad. The Board then rose.
