offered at up to within on last month’s rates, beyond which point buyers would not advance ; several lots had consequently to be withdrawn, not reaching owners’ reserves. At the salerooms on the following day the same disinclination to operate up to the level of former rates was very apparent, and for many lots of heavy crossbreds there was little or no competition. From Dunedin we learn that the opening sales of the season passed off with spirit, but at an average decline of Id on crossbreds and Id on merinos compared with the opening sales of last season. Melbourne advices report crowded attendances at the sales and brisk competition, but such high rates were not ruling, owing to the inferior condition of the parcels offering.
Sheepskins.—There was a good attendance at the usual Thursday’s sales, and notwithstanding the quantities of wool taken by fcllmongers during the past few weeks biddings came freely. Prices were generally on a par with late rates, but for bn tellers’ heavy cross-breds and pelts a slight reduction must be noted. We submitted a nicely-assorted catalogue, for which the following prices were obtained:— Butchers’ cross-breds, large, 5/8 to fi/lj; second quality, 4/8 to 5/8 ; merinos, largo, 5/(5 to li/4 ; second quality, 4/1 to 4/11 ; country cross-brcds were quitted at from •2/8 too/!); and merinos, M/8 to (I/O ; pelts, made up to 1/5 ; and lambskins were quitted at 1/ to 1/7. Hides. —There is no impiovement to note in the demand ; 4d is now full market rate, and this we obtained for all sent forward. Tallow. —The demand is fairly brisk ; for bard, clean mutton, 27/ is current down to 1:)/ for badly saved. Hough fat commands 2yd to 2[d, the latter" figure wis obtained by us for all forward. The Melbourne branch reports under date December 14th : Wool. —The dilferent sales during the past week have boon well attended, and the competition throughout maintained at the present level of rates, which are a shade easier than those lately ruling. At our last sale we submitted 2094 bales to a crowded attendance of the trade, who competed with spirit for every lot. greasy realising up to IM/d per lb. We disposed of I(>s(> bales at satisfactory prices. At our sale to-morrow wc offer a catalogue of over 2000 bales. Wheat.—New has been sold to some extent during the week from 4s 10Id to ss, and these prices were obtained at our sale to-day. P.iime old has declined, the latest sale being at 5s Id for really fine milling wheat ; medium we quote at 4s 9.1 to 4s lid : inferior, 4s 5d to 4s Sd. Baulk v.—The steady increase in the deliveries of new has influenced prices, and we have again to report an easy tone in the market. Really prime well-cleaned and full-ripe samples of Chevalier realised very full prices, but the parcels of .English coming to hand arc mainly of inferior and medium qualities, which maltsters do not care to purchase. Sales made at Ms 2.1 to Ms 3d for inferior, suitable for feed purposes ; Ms4d to Ms (id for medium to good.
We cannot report any improvement in the Oat market ; the supply is still in excess of requirements, and the trade as a rule are purchasing only when they can obtain what they regard as bargains, ft must not be forgotten that although Maize still rules extaemcly high, there is a large supply of cheap feed in the market in the shape of low-class Barley, which checks any improving tendency in the price of Oats for the time. Sales effected at 2s Sd for inferior, to Ms for common light feed, and Ms 5d and Ms 4d for stout feed. Offers, however, have been made for large parcels of Xew Zealand in bond at 2s 5d for export and declined. Peas. — Higher, 5s to 5s Mid paid.
