PARIAMENTARY ITEMS.

[j)V TELKURAPJI.] WELLINGTON. Friday, .June 24' The proceedings in the House were exceedingly tame, tiie Licensing Bill being still in Committee. Mr Fox attempted to erase the clause for accommodation houses,(stigmatising them as abominable and iniquitous drunken dens, but after considerable discussion tile clause as printed was passed. The only alteration made, was that of allowing barmaids only to work eight boms per day, instead of 10, and not to work after 10 in the evening instead of 11. The House will piobably adjourn on Wednesday or Thursday next, so as to permit of members attending the Industrial Exhibition at Dunedin. Government, it is thought, will not object, as they desire time to prepare the Local Government measure. The reply of the Postmaster General to a question put yesterday, acknowledging that Government had forwarded telegrams

to the Government of the Australian colonies containing the names of those telegraph officials who took part in the strike of last yeat, was unfavorably commented on in lobbies to-day, and both the Wellington papers condemn the course adopted by Government. The Representation Bill will not be introduced until after the Financial Statement and Local Government Bill is introduced. The Licensing Bill is expected to be finished to-night. The regulation of Elections Bill, and the Corrupt Practices Bill passed the first reading to-day, on the motion of the Postmaster General. Twenty of the Wellington unemployed are to be sent to Pa tea to work on the Carlyle section.of railway. Saturday, June 25. The Licensing Bill passed through Committee last night, but there still remain the Schedules and a good many debatable clauses, which were postponed to be considered. It is believed a strong attempt will be made to throw out the Bill on the third reading, as in its present shape it is distasteful to many members. It is understood that the Representation Bill will not affect the district of Marlborough, but Nelson and Westland each lose a member, which is to be added to Auckland and Otago. The House will consist of DO members. Government will not adjourn the House, so as to permit members to attend the Exhibition at Dunedin. Sir G. Grey will move on Thursday for leave to introduce a Bill to provide for the establishment of a better system of Local Self Government in New Zealand. The new Regulation of Elections Bill provides for the written nomination of candidates, each or either may nominate himself or be nominated by no fewer than ten electors. Candidates to deposit LlO which is to be returned if he poll one-iifth as many votes as the candidate who heads the poll. Mr Stuart asks Government on Tuesday what replies were received from the Australian Government as to the dismissal of Telegraph officials.
