HAVELOCK.

[From Our Own Correspondent.] •la navy 27. Tilk annual meeting of the householders of Havelock was held in the boys’ school at 12.J0 p.m. on Monday last, Mr .las. H. Smith in the chair. The balance-sheet and asset and liability sheet for last year was read by the Chairman. It was moved by Dr Riley and seconded by Mr .1. H. Smith, se i., that the ba'anceslieet as read be adopted, and that the new Committee inquire into the deficiency due from the central Board. There were ten householders nominated, and on a b.Pot being taken it resulted in the return of Messrs Alexander Clarke, Dive, Dorreen, Guinness, Mills, and Smith. At the same hour a meeting of householders from Pelorous Sound was held in the girls’ school room, Havelock, and resulted in the return of Messrs Clifford, Forrest, Henderson, Manic, H. Mills. Moss, aue R. Pope. At Canvas town, at 12. JO p.m., the meet irg of householders was held. The following report was read :

To the Householders of the Pelorus School District. Gentlemen,- The last general meeting of the householders taking place shortly after the re-opening of the Cauvastown School, the permanency of the establishment was at the time a matter of anxious conjecture, the advisability of reducing all schools with an average attendance be l ow a certain number to the level of assisted schools, having been mooted at the Education Board. In submitting to you its report for the past year your Committee is happy to be able to state that the Cauvastown School is now out of all danger even if such regulations were adopted, the hopes of an increased attendance being fully realized, the number of children , now on the school books amounting to thirty-c : ght. Towards this very satisfactory result the teacher, Mr John Irwin Hart has by bis alrlity, and kindness and attention to the children, and his generally obhging conduct to all, very largely contributed.

The Teacher's residence, the enlargement of the school room, and the clearing of the schoool ground, have been ti e principal improvements made to the property during the last twelve months, in addition to these works paid for out of the funds at the disposal of the Education Board, the balancesheet accompanying this report will show that many smaller works have been undertaken by your Committee, on whose funds it should lie remarked, the increased attendance has caused a proportionately increased demand.

Your Committee cannot close this report without expressing its sincere regret for the loss of its old member, Mr Robert Jones, one of the oldest residents of the Pelorus. With him a good neighbour lias passed away, ever anxious for the welfare of the school, where his cirldrcn have regularly attended since its first opening : he seldom absented himself from the meetings of your Committee when there was work to be done.—l have, &e. Joshua Rutland, Chairman of Committee. Cauvastown, Jan. 24, 18S1.

The following Committee was then elected :—Messrs Bowen, Couper, Hippolite, Hughes, Reader, Rutland, and Wilson. The meeting of householders of Kaituna Valley District was held in the new school liou.se at 7 p.m., on Monday, January 24th. The Committee of the past yea? report:— At length the school buildings are finished and the school room furnished with the necessary desks, &c., hut there are several articles yet wanted which it will he the business of the Committee elected this day to procure. The Committee have received five applications from gentlemen asking to be elected as teacher, but your Committee think that a female would be best for the school for the first few years at any rate, and have advertised for one—applications on 10th February next —so we may expect to see the school opened in the early part of March. Messrs Blake, Farnell, McDowell, Moore, Swaflord, and Williams were elected members of the Committee. The inhabitants of this school district are to be congratulated on the completion of their school house and teacher’s residence, adjoining the main road, both of which are ornaments to the locality. The Kaituna school building has a frontage of thirty feet to the main road, by a depth of twenty-six feet; the front elevation is handsome, though not richly ornamental. There is one entrance, three windows in front, and three at the side ; the windows and doors are pedimented, the pediments are supported by brackets that relieve the appearance of the building, and add materially to the general good effect. The room is lofty, splendidly lighted by windows, ar.d well ventilated. There is a lavatory, play ground for boys and girls, and furniture on the newest and most approved models.

The teacher’s residence contains three rooms 12 x 14 each, with a passage and store-room. These picturesque buildings can hardly be properly estimated, and they reflect great credit on Mr Douslin, the architect, and Mr Richard Jones, the builder, of Havelock.

Messrs Dive and Sinclair have been nominated for the vacancies about to ensue in the Education Board by the late Have lock and Kaituna School Committees.
