BLENHEIM SWIMMING CLUB.

Tine first swimming match held under the auspices of the above Club took place in the Opawa river yesterday. 'l'he club was unfortunate in the matter of weather, the water being rather too cold, but taken ar- a whole the competition for the various events was good. The swimming of the winner of the 880 yards handicap was particularly admired, as was also that of Mr Clarke, who came in a good second. The winner of the 50 yards boys race, Smith, struck out well, and bids fair to develop into a good swimmer. We trust, however, that upon future occasion the number of entries for these events will be greater, and .also that the attendance of the public will be larger. The object of the club in encouraging excellence in this useful art, is a very laudable one, and well merits more general support. We should like to see some of our leading citizens offer special prizes for some the events in these competitions. Mr Seymour acted as judge and Mr Horton as starter, the duties of both being discharged in a most satisfactory manner. We must also accord a meed of praise to the energetic Secretary Mr A. Clarke to whose untiring perseverance the success of the gathering is principally due. The following is result of the various events :

1. 100yds Race, Open ; Ist prize £2, 2nd £l. Geo. Murray 1 A. Kivell 2 Five entries.
