SPORTING.
WANGANUI SPRING MEETING. Wanuam t, October. 29. For the Wanganui Spring Meeting there was grand weather and a large attendance. The course was in beautiful order, the lawn being as level as a bowling green, and covered with beautiful sward. Maiden Plate 50 sovs.—Messenger (late Port Wine), 1; Chandler, 2; Camelia made the running, but was overtaken at the mile-post by Messenger, who took a commanding lead, and stalled off a determined rush by Chandler. Handicap Hurdle Race, 50 sovs.—King Don, 1; Grey Momus, 2; Old Ireland,3. It was a very close race; King Don jumping magnificently, and beating Momus for place. Lady Mary and Leotard fell, the rider of the first named being hurt. Ten started. Time, 4min. 32sec. Wanganui Stakes Handicap, 150 sovs.— Hailstorm, fist 21b (D. Champion), 1 ; Opawa, 2 ; Rocket, 3. Astronomer, Otawa, Marie Stuart, My Dream, and Wilberforee also started' liaflstorm and My Dream were made the favorites at 3to 1. Wilberforce made the running for a mile, and then Rocket assumed command, with Hailstorm second. Entering the straight Hailstorm challenged the leader, and gradually wore him down, winning by a length. Opawa came with a rush at at the finish, and beat Rocket for second honors by a head. Time, 4miu. 7;i.see.
Railway Plate, 50 sovs.—Hailstorm 1 ; Redeemer, 2 ; Soukar, 3. Five started. This was a punishing race between the first and second, both running neck and neck the whole way. Hailstorm ran with great gameness, and won by about half a length •Soukar never could get up, and finished a had third. Time 2min. 47:}scc. Consolation Stakes—My Dream, 1 ; Rocket, 2 ; Opawa, 3. A very fast race, with a good finish.
