ORGAN RECITAL.
On Tuesday evening last an Organ Recital j was gives at the Church of the Nativity and a collection was made in aid of the sufferers by the late fire at Rcnwiek Town. ; There was a good attendance, the novelty of the service here and the object for which | the collection was made combining to swell 1 the numbers of those present. The voluni tary, “ Qui Tollis,” play ad by Mr Carey j ’ was finely executed, and was followed by i i the Venerable Archdeacon Butt, who then ! proceeded to deliver a short address appro- | priate to the occasion. He explained that j the object of the gathering’was to aid the sufferers by the late fire, that such services I were held in many other places and had i been found to work well. The programme i was then proceeded with. It comprised i the following items and was gone through I in a manner which was highly creditable to ! the performers, and was heartily appreciated by the audience. “ Like as a Father, by Meadames Fell, C’arcy, and MTntosh ; I “Waft her, Angels - ’ by Mrs Fell ; “Thine, j Oh Lord,” by the full strength of the Choir; j “ Lead, Kindly Light” (hymn No. 200) ; “But Thou didst not Leave ” by Mr Birch ; j “ Incline Thine Ear,” by Mr Holmes. This I brought the first part of the programme to a conclusion. A symphony was then played by Mr Carey, during which the offertory was collected and a sum of LlO
was taken. The second portion of the proirianime comprised. “ Resignation, a solo )iy Mrs M lntosh ; “ We Love the Flaw, Oh God ” sunir b\ the audience ; Andante. “ Regina Cell.” '.Mr Rogers; “ -Uihilate,” by Mesdame-s Fell and M lntosh ; “ Ini n Thy Face,"solo and chorus by Mr Linn and the Choir; “ Nazareth,'' by Mr Holmes, and “ Saviour, Again to 1 by dear Name,” (hymn 31) by the audience, lie; whole concluded with a voluntary shortly after nine o'clock, and many present regretted that this attractive service did not fast longer, which is on-- of the best, pieces of testimony to its ex lienee tluit could p-.ssihly be given. During the pieces, “Thine, Oh Lord," “ Hymn 2%," and “ Reeina C<eli,” Mr Rogers officiated at the organ, and Miss Clark and Mr ( a icy dining the rest of the service, and each and all of them, as well as the singers, richly earned the hearty thanks of those who were present on this occasion. The sound of the organ and of the voices of the Choir were heard to much greater advantage than they usually have been, owing probably to the judicious alteration which lias been made in the seating. The members of the Choir are now placed in front of the Communion table on each side of it outside the rails, and the Church authorities have thereby effected a very great alteration for the better which can hardly fail to he appreciated by the congregation.
