LOWER WAIRAU RIVERS BOARD.

The Board met last evening at half-past seven o’clock. Present—Messrs C . Redwood (in the chair), Horne, Kyles, Davies, and Parker. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Bushell, reported the accounts as correct for the year ending 31st March, hut pointed out that one payment of LI2 to Mr Gosling for work and labor was made without authority by minute. The balance sheet showed an available balance of L3OO. The Report was adopted, and the balance sheet ordered to he printed. IN ME MR ECUEEs’ TRUSTEES.

In reply to Dr Horne the Chairman said no further proceedings had been taken in j the matter of an amount of LI3S) said to he due to the Board from the estate of the : late Mr E. Eccles. j On the motion of Mr Davies, seconded by Mr Barker, it was resolved that Mr Sinclair, solicitor, ho instructed to apply to the trustees for the amount stated to he i due to the Board. LAW EXPENSES. Correspondence was laid before the Board j ; from which it appeared that Mr Gordon j Allan's fee of L<s3 in the matter of C. Red- ; wood v. Bowler and others had been paid ; by Mr Sinclair, which left a balance of LIS due by the Board, who had agreed for L4;> only. Mr Sinclair submitted that the fees were not excessive under the circumstances ! and that the Board would he ready to pay the amount without hesitation. Mr Allan j wrote to Mr Sinclair stating that lie understood that the same amount had been I agreed to he paid to Mr Travers. Dr Horne said he was not aware that the : Board had agreed to pay Mr Travers L(>o. j The Chairman said Mr Travers had said ] his fee for coming here was 1,4'), but he j could not conic on this occasion, It was ; then agreed to offer a fancy fee to Mr ' Travers of L(io, and this having leaked out Mr Allan wanted as much as Mr r l ravers. - He (the Chairman) considered Mr Sinclair ( had put his foot into it, although acting in good faith. The Board never authorised a j payment of L(io to Mr Allan. I M r Davies moved and Mr Kyles seconded that the balance of LIS he paid. j Mr Parker suggested that the Board , should give an expression of their opinion j that Mr Sinclair had exceeded his duty in j offering LOO to Mr Allan without the authority of the Board. The motion that the balance of £IS he paid, was agreed to. RIVER PROTECTIVE WORKS. Mr Kyles said there were about 3 chains of willow work near the slaughter-house at Pose’s bend, which were much required, and moved that it he proceeded with inline- : diately. Dr Horne sedomled the motion which was carried. Mr Davies pointed out that a wing of j piles and willows as a protective work was required at Thompson’s bend. The Chairman stated that lie bought on behalf of the Board a punt for £3 from Mr Lawrence, hut Mr Sutlierly informed him the punt was his. The bargain was a good one, and the punt is now in use at the ferry. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for , payment :—II. Tyler L 7 7s, A. Potter Lb Id, Bary LI His, do LI7, G. The Chairman said the next business of the Board was the election of a permanent Secretary (in the room of the late Mr T. O’Sullivan). The standing order provided that seven days notice should he given by advertisement, hut as the fact of a vacancy j ' was well-known, and as several applica- * tions had been sent in, lie suggested that the standing order might be suspended, and | the Board proceed to elect a Secretary. j Applications from Messrs R. D. Nos- , worthy, G. Stenhousc, and G. S. Budge, were read. Dr Horne said lie would move that seven davs’ notice be given by advertisement. He understood that tliere would he several j applicants whose names did not appear. j Mr Kyles seconded the motion, which i was carried. The Board then adjourned.
