HAVELOCK
(From our Own Correspondent.) Havelock, Aug. 3. Ox Friday, the 30th ult., a seaman, named Joseph Werner, was reported to be prowling about the streets, armed with a revolver. He intimated that he wanted William Oliver, for the purpose of despatching him. This vas supposed to be owing to an argument which had taken place outlie previous evening in one of the hotels between Werner and Captain Reardon, of the schooner Sisters, on which occasion Oliver sided with Reardon. Werner met Oliver subsequently in Doreen’s Hotel and immediately point c'd the revolver at him saying “I have settled that man on board (meaning Reardon) and I have come here to settle you ; I have a pipe here which smokes hot; come outside.” Information of this was communicated to the police about a quarter past 11, who, after failing to find Werner in town, concluded he had gone onboard the Sisters. The police at about midnight went in Smith’s mail boat on board the Sisters, which was lying at the point, Reardon was on board, and stated that Werner bad threatened to shoot him that evening. He was not on hoard at this time. Reardon was asked to come ashore, but refused, sayina he did not wish to leave the vessel with out some one being on board. Early on Saturday morning the vessel left the point and nothing further has been heard of the matter.
A very pleasant evening was spent last Monday, when about 40 couples were present at the Town Hall, where the members oftlie Hunt Club gave a ball, to which they invited their lady friends. Dancing commenced at S o’clock, and was kept up with great spirit until 2 next morning. The music, which gave great satisfaction, was supplied by Messrs Vaunini and Clarke ; two of the ladies present rendering thenvaluable assistance at intervals. The majority of the gentlemen present appeared in hunting costume, which afforded a pleasing vaiiety to the gathering. It is" the intention of a few ladies and gentlemen connected with the musical world of Havelock, to give a concert in the Town Hall cn Friday evening next, on behalf of Mrs Pike, who is left a widow with a young family, her husband having been lost in the Colleen Bawn, on the night of May 0, on her passage from Wellington to Havelock. The following are the vital statistics, Pelorus District, for the period ending July 31:—Births 0, marriages and deaths nil.
