[from our own correspondent.] PICTON. This Day. The case Cox v. Dick, of. Nydia Bay, Havelock, occupied the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning. Mr Con oily for plaintiff, and Messrs Rogers and McNab for defendant. A verdict was given for defendant, with costs, the Court having no jurisdiction. [FROM OUR WELLINGTON CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Monday. At an inquest held at Winton touching the death of Mrs Cameron, wife of a laborer at Winton, the jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against l)r Moffat, on the ground that Mrs Cameron’s death resulted from gross criminal neglect and unskilfulness. Captain Sharp, who came out to the Colony thirty-five years ago, and had been formerly an officer in the East India Service expired this morning. He was at one time Collector of Customs at Wanganui and at Wellington. He was 74 years of age. His death was caused by bronchitis. Mr Speight, M.H.R., received a formidable petition from the Thames, praying that the records of the Committee which | unseated Grey for Christchurch may be struck off the journals of the House. It is one of the largest petitions ever presented to the House. Nothing further has been heard of the missing schooner Boneke. Captain Petersen, of the steamer Taiaroa expired this morning at Dunedin. He was well known by the passengers along the coast. The Supreme Court sittings commenced to-day. Jens Wingcrstef, charged with ! larceny as a bailee was found guilty, and sentenced to 12 months with hard labor ; George Williams, charged with larceny (two indictments) was sentenced to 18 months hard labor, the sentences to run concurrently ; J. F. Thompson, charged with forging and uttering a cheque, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, but sen- i ten'oe was deferred ; a second charge of j forging and uttering is still proceeding. j AUCKLAND. Monday. A lad named Burton had his ankle dislocated by a turntable on the wharf yesterday afternoon. DUNEDIN. Monday. Apparently some danger is done by the floods on the line between Dunedin and Oamaru, as the express is delayed some hours. ! TIMARU. Monday. Heavy rain has fallen continuously for 48 hours, and the rivers are much swollen but no flood damage is reported. Forty Oiangemen, wearing yellow rosettes held an annual church parade yester- j day, but the procession was unmolested. ; CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. A scene occurred at the Ashburton Resident Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Purnell, a solicitor, and plaintiff in a civil case, objected to O'Reilly, defendant’s solicitor, bieng heard, whereupon Mr Guinness, the R.M., ordered Purnell to sit down. The latter refused, and when told he should not do so, replied that it would be the first illegal act done in that Court. On repeated refusals to sit down he was committed to seven days’ imprisonment for contempt, but subsequently Purnell’s induced the Magistrate to accept an apology, when Purnell was liberated. _ The N.Z. Shipping Company’s ship Waimate, which left Lyttelton on the 9th April, has arrived at London. A meeting of the North Canterbury School Teachers, held on Saturday, it was resolvthat the meeting heartily endorses the general opinion that the teachers’ pension scheme in the present form is not to be an advantage to the teachers of New Zealand. There was a very heavy south wester storm yesterday, and a tremendous quantity of rain fell, but the weather is now clearing.
