MODEST AUCKLAND!
The following Auckland telegram appeared in our last issue:—“A public meeting is to be held next Wednesday to protest agoinst the Property Tax, unless the North of Auckland railway is provided for by money or land. The North of Auckland Railway Committee have requested Sir G. Grey to show in the House the injustice of levying the tax in the northern districts, where so little borrowed money has been expended.” This is a charming specimen of Auckland’s proverbial modesty. The utter absurdity of the ground taken up by the Auckland agitators, and the hopeless inconsequence of their arguments, are too palpable to need demonstration. For their comfort however wc may remind them that if the railways
are constructed, and the value of their properties increased they will have to pay so much more Property Tax, whereas if the railways are not made their property will be worth so much less and they wall pay proportionately less, taxes. Surely this ought to satisfy them!— Port.
