LOWER WAIRAU RIVERS BOARD.
A SPECIAL meeting of the Lower Wairau Rivers Board was held last evening. Present—Messrs G. Redwood (in the chair), Davis, Horne, Eylcs, and Parker. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Eyles reported an overflow of the Oinaka river on Mrs Budge’s farm and proposed that the Board inspect the site with the view of remedying the evil complained of. Mr Davies seconded the motion, which was carried, and it was agreed that a visit should be paid to the locality on Saturday afternoon.
It was moved by the Chairman and seconded by Mr Davies, that the rate for the current year should be Is in the £ in respect of lands in class 1 and Gd in class 2. Mr Eyles and Mr Parker ''oted against it, but Mr Lyles subsequently withdrew his objection and the motion was carried, Mr Parker alone voting against it. It was stated that the rating power of the Board for # the present year at the above rate was about £770.
The following accounts were passed for payment : —Smaat Lll 11s Id, Bary LG 10s, Put kiss (collections) Ll 9 4s 9d, Batty (Rose’s bank contract) L9B. The payment of Mr Smart’s account was passed subject to the completion of the contract. The Board then went into Committee privately on legal and financial matters, and it is stated that it was agreed to go on with the Omaka diversion by cutting through the bank. If this is correct it is a very “ hole and corner” way of proceeding.
