[MELBOURNE ARCUS SPECIAL] LONDON, March 30. Although they have no distinctive foreign programme, save that they will imt.destroy Lord Beaconsfield’s work, the Liberals are more united than their recent votes in Parliament, on questions of foreign policy, would have led people to expect. The instances are few in which more than one Liberal candidate stands for the same seat. The Conservatives anticipate a bare working majority, while the Liberals declare that they are certain of ousting the Conservatives. There is increasing evidence that the working men are taking more interest in the elections than on previous occasions. There is enormous excitement over the borough elections, which take place this week. Although the state of trade is improving, the bulk of the people are not touched by the improvement.
[FROM OUR WELLINGTON CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Monday. The Customs duties collected at the Port of Wellington for the week ending Saturday last amounted t0£3,395. Three men who went shooting on the Wairarapa Lake are supposed to be drowned by tlie upsetting of a boat. Their names are Francis Cross, George .Cooley., and Devereux. Search parties have been out. but returned without finding the bodies.
DUNEDIN. Monday. A serious fire occurred between one anil two o'clock on Sunday morning at the Foundry of Alessrs A. and T. Burt, Cumberland-street. The damage done will probably amount to £IOOO. The fittings for the new Municipal Buildings were wholly destroyed. The Insurances are. South British £2OOO, one-third of the risk being re-insured in the United Office. The Taiaroa with the ’Frisco Alail is expected to arrive here about midnight. The Newcastle miners have consented to a reduction in the getting price of coal as proposed by the owners, and on and after to-day a reduction of 4s per ton will be made in the price of coal at the pit’s mouth. The reported sale of the Rcn'jitikei Advocate is denied by tlie proprietor, Mr Kirkbride. The recommendations of the Committee of the City Council, which met on Friday evening, and considered the salaries of the Wharf staff, are that the salaries of the several wharf officials be considerably reduced, and that the wages of the men be reduced one shilling per day. A private telegram was received in town to-day to the effect that Alessrs Caldwell’s store at Cheltenham, near Fielding, has bsen totally destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The building was insured for £IOO, and the stock for £l5O, both in the National.
The Rev. Air Davis lectured last night in the Handock-street Baptist Chapel to a great audience, oh “ Being out of work.” He spoke from personal observation of the distress in Dunedin, which he alleged was more wide spread than people believed. In all the foundries the hands were working half-time, and out of 90 compositors only GO were in regular work, the rest being on quarter-time, or doing nothing. Fully 50 carpenters were out of work, while the bulk of the tradesmen were earning only from 30s to 50s weekly in the building trade, arid 300 men are idle. There are 84 tailors on half-time and 50 grocers’ assistants idle.
CHRISTCHURCH. Alonday. At Rangiora on Saturday, a man named Joseph Summers was run over by a dray, fracturing his leg. Tho lad McKay, who fell over a cliff on Friday, died next day. During the present month five vessels givikg a total of SI9S tons have arrived to load for Home, and at the present time there are eleven vessels representing 120* SSO tons on berths for London and other ports in the United Kingdom. Afr Manginiss, of Greeiulale, has just threshed 52 bushels of wheat per acre from a 30 acre paddock, and 50 bushels of barley per acre from another paddock. GRAHAMSTOWN. Monday. The High Seliool here was formally opened by the Mayor to-day. There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen, and speeches were made referring to the Educational policy of the Colony and the munificence of Government.

A man named .Henry Pickett has been severely injured-bo a fall of earth ill the Alburnia mine this morning;. A large Committee lias been appointed at a public meeting, to take steps to have the electoral roll filled up.
