WAIRAU ROAD BOARD.

The Board met at half-past 2 o’clock. Present, Messrs Ward (in the Chair), Coulter. Avery, Hodson, and Kellor. The minutesof the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ONAMAi.im;. The Secretary was instructed to prepare an agreement to be signed by the settlors in the locality for the taking land for a road at Bartlett’s Bush, Wairau Valley, and that the Inspector of Works be instructed to prepare estimates and lay oil'the road. A letter was read from Mr 0. Court, accepting L 5 for a piece of land at Onamalutu Valley, and it was resolved that Mr Rogers he instructed to prepare a conveyance of the land in question. Mr Wood’s tender for clearing the road at the Onamalutu Valley, for a width of 20 feet, at 10s per chain—time, six weeks was accepted. The following tenders were also sent in :—J. Paul 14s per chain, time five months; 8. Smart and Co. 25s Gd do do; C. Somerfield 27s do, 4 do; E. Morris and Co. 2Ss do, 4 do; W. Hounsell 40s do, 4 do.
ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were ordered to be paid—J. Tait, Times, L 3 17s Z&; Express L 4 4s. On the motion of Mr Hodson it was ngreed.that ten chains of the cross road between sections 34 and'3G be metalled. ROAD REPAIRS. On the motion of. Mr Goulter, it was agreed that the portion! of the Middle Renwiek Road, between tlie Gth mile post and tiie cross road to Dog Point, should be formed and metalled if the Omaha Board would bear half the cost, and that the Secretary be instructed to communicate with that body on the subject. The Inspector was instructed to repair fords, etc., on the hog Point Hoad. Mr Hodson said unless the gorse were cleared away from the. Taylor river-bed near Burleigh, great damage would be done by the overflow of the river. He had waited on the Borough Council some months ago, who were were willing to bear half the cost. He moved that the Secretary inform the Council that this Board was willing to bear half the cost of cleaaing the gorse from the river bed at Burleigh to the swing gate between Meadow Bank and Vernon run. Mr Kellor seconded the motion. By a reference to the boundaries described in the Act it appeared that it rested with the Borough of Blenheim and the Omaha District to see to the matter, rather than the Borough and the Wairau Board, and the motion was not put. The Inspector was instructed to inspect and report on the crossing of the Fairhall river on section 110. The Inspector reported that a bridge or culvert was required at Dead Horse creek, near the Narrows. Mr Kellor moved that tenders be called for the work. Mr Avery seconded the motion which was carried. COUNTY COUNCIL. A letter was read from the Marlborough County Council advising the Board that 1G per cent, of the County subsidy, loss 7 % for hospital had been allocated to the Board. Mr Goulter said the district had not been fairly treated in the matter of subsidies, which had ben apportioned thus : —Picton, 19 per cent, and 7 per cent, for hospital; Wairau IG, hospital 7 ; Awatere 15, Havelock 5, Spring Creek 13, Omaka 10 and 1 per cent for County charges, Pelorus 22, Pie moved that in the opinion of the Board, this district has not been fairly treated in the matter of the allocation of the Government subsidy by the County Council, and that a fairer division should be made on a pro rata basis. This was agreed to. MAHER’S FLAT, A letter was read from Mr Lambert, Chairman of the Kaituna Education Committee in reference to a footbridge over the Onamalutu stream at Maher’s Flat. It was resolved that an estimate of [the cost of the bridge be furnished to the next meeting. BALANCE. The Secretary reported that there was a balance to the credit of the Boat'd of L 954 15a Od. inspector's report. Mr Maddock reported that he had visited Bartlett’s Valley, and found that the settlers had fenced the trespass road, and had completely fenced in Messrs Pipe and Fabin, All the settlers are willing to give land for a road provided it is made at once. A good road is practicable, but, the cost can not be accurately stated until it has been surveyed,
