LTPEJI WAIRAU GOLDFIELD. (From a Correspondent.) March 15. So far as I am aware there have been no fresh funis of importance since i last wrote to you, and as I before stated anythin', like a rush is to be deprecated, tle rc being noth ing to warrant it. There are now about SO miners on the ground, and the average amount of gold per man obtaiue 1 up to the present time would not amount to ordinary wages. still the yield is not barren, and it is quite on the cards that payable gold may be struck. Watson and mate I hear have got about three ounces between them since they have been on the ground and they were amongst the first comers since the late discovery. Taylor and party are at work higher up the valley than I have so far had time and opportunity to reach and I cannot ascertain with anything like accuracy what they are doing. The probabilities are that they are not dissatisfied with their prospects, or they would have “given it best,"’ as I hear Doreen and party from Haveloock have done. Last Sunday’s rain here filled the creek and drove several off to the terraces. J his would seem to imply that in W inter it will not be ikely that sluicing operations will be can ; d on successfully near the Creek, except i considerable on tlay. I am glad that Mr Bek seems willing to make iernis with the miners, lie is willing to continue to sell them mutton at 3 per lb, and (lour can be purchase on the ground at 19 per cwc. The Warden has not yet honored us with a visit. Whether lie will do so or not seems problematical, unless his official superiors intimate to him that should do so. Miners from the Wakamarina side continue to come over by way of the track from the Forks, across the range. From them 1 hear that Mitchell and party look forward to a good “ washing up ’ and they richly deserve it after their IS months work. I hear that there are still a few miners working at Onamalutu, but I have no authentic information as to what they are doing. There is a rumor also of something having been done lately at “the Sutherland,” but nothing definite has transpired. The next few weeks before the setting in of the bad weather will be anxiously watch ed by those who hope that a payable field may be struck on the W airau side of the dividing range.
