NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

As considerable interest has been taken in the late Rifle contest at Nelson, and especially in the performance of our own men, it wiil be interesting to volunteers to compare the shooting of their representatives with that of the leading men and note the remarkable improvement as contrasted with last year, which, as the weather at both competitions was equally good, may fairly be done. We, therefore, append a detail of the points made by our volunteers in each match as well as that of the Champion (Okey) and the ex-Champion (Ballinger), showing in each case the number made last year, when similar matches took place : Match No. 1.—200, 400, and .100 yards. Seven shots at each distance. ISSO. 1ST!).

Match No. 2.—200 yards. Ten rounds. 18S0. 1871).

Match No 4.—400, 500, and GOO yards. Seven rounds at each distance. ISSO. 1879.

Match No, 7. —200, 400, 500, and G( ) yds Seven rounds at each range. 1880. 1879.

Match No. 9.—300, 4( 0, and 500 yards, Seven shots at each range. 1880.

Match No. 11.- — 2OO and 500 yards, Ton shots at each range. 1880.

Match No. 15.—200 and 300 yards. Seven shots at each range. 1880.

Match No. 16.—Rifle Company’s Challenge Match, 200, 400, 500. and GOO yds. Seven shots at each range. 188(1. 1879.

From the above it will be seen how remarkably well the five men who went to

Nelson last year have shot on this occasion, the others, being younger hands, of course could not be expected on this their first effort to come to the front. In the aggregates for the Champion Belt, that is the totals obtained in matches 2,4, 7, and 11, the following list shows the positions of the five alluded to Okey (Champion)... ... ... 279 Rogers, 3rd with ... ... •• • 207 McKenzie, 9th 259 Hood, 10th 259 Turner, 12th ... ... ... 258 Griffiths, 17th 254 Taking matches in which they all competed, the total scores show as follows :

Ballinger (ex-Champion) ... 517 The Blenheim Company of Rifle Volunteers, remembering that about 200 of the picked shots of the Colony were competitors, will gather from our compilation that they have good cause to be proud of their representatives, whose shooting has, in the aggregate exceeded that of any other company in New Zealand represented. In common with the majority it will also he noticed that the. shooting was a considerable improvemenu on last year, when they won abut £2O, whereas their prize money this year amounted to over £7O, in additio .to the fact of Sub-Lieut. Rogers obtaining 3rd place, and thereby winning the Silver Medal.
