PUBLIC OPINION (A COLUMN FOR THE PEOPLE.) THE COUNTY OFFICES.

| (To the Editor). ! Sir, —Re the above and " Ratepay- ' ers" remarks. I read same with disgust. Fancy, Sir, any man with brains advocating sending money out of his county to enrich the Cambridge borough, and more especially when the countv has fine offices in Tirau. I trust Cr. Darby will work as hard J io get a permanent clerk in Tirau as he has done for the Arapuni scheme. It is a crying disgrace to have Council Chambers in Tirau and no clerk in attendance daily. I will admit you have a good man in the present clerk, but evidently ■ " Ratepayer " forgets there ar; just as good pebbles on the beach as ever came off-it. Should the present clerk decide to leave New Zaland I would like to know what " Ratepayer " would do then 1 " Rater&yer's "' summing up of his favourite councillors I compare with a burst tyre. A big blow and nothing left. ' As regards Cr. Darby and the Arapuni scheme, I think the people of the surrounding district should subscribe and contribute very handsomely to Cr. Darby to show their appreciation of the good work done by him in getting the Arapuni scheme pushed on so "far. If "Ratepayer" had his way the Waikato would still be running to waste. As regards mud slinging, " Ratepayer " . should practices what ho preaches. Good luck to Cr. Darby n he is fdrtunate enough to have'land adjoining the Arapuni site. "Ratepayer" gives me the impression that he has never left his farm (except to deliver milk to the factory) | and I would suggest a little trip and , perhaps he would return with better ideas;' and, firstly, that with the clerk and engineer living in Tirau better results' would be achieved for the county generally and the ratepayers in particular. Here's luck to a resident clerk in Tirau—l am, etc., " HOKIANGA."
