HINUERA.
NEW TENUIS COURTS. Only one of the two sand courts at the Hinuera Tennis Club's new grounds being ready for play, the official opening, which was to have taken place last Monday (Labour Day), was postponed until' a date early in November. Nevertheless there was a large attendance of Hinuera residents present on Monday and during the morning a working bee of members was held in order to push the court ahead to allow of play being held on it in the afternoon. In the absence'of the president, Mr. H. Pond, Mr. W. Settle, chairman of the committee, made a few remarks, in tho course of which he thanked the residents of Hinuera in general ?,nd the members of the tennis club in particular for the very great assistance rendered by them in the way of preparing the grounds for play. It was only tlie'weather and other circumstances over'.which they had had no control which had prevented both courts being opened that day. The official opening, however, would be held later on, and everything augured well for a highly-successful season and a prosperous life for the club. At the conclusion of Mr. Settle's speech Mrs. W. Settle played the first Ball over the net and the court was declared unofficially opened. During the day the ladies of the club provided lunch for the workers at the bee and jrfao dispensed afternoon tea. 7\: THE GROUNDS. With regard to the tennis grounds themselves a great deal of work has been accomplished, although much remains to be done. One sand courj., the one played on on Monday, is practically completed, but the other, although formed, still requires a certain amount of levelling and rolling. On the southern side of the courts a high stop net has been erected, and the frame, but not the wire netting, is in position for the one on the northern side. The grounds adjacent to the courts have been planted with young hedges and omamenCal shrubs and It is expected that the question of the erection 'of a small pavilion will .shortly receive consideration. DANCE. Owing to the postponement of the tennis club's opening the dance which was to have been held in the evening was also put off. .
