PUTARURU-NAPIER.
The Ranfurly Shield Rugby match between Auckland and Hawke's Bay at Napier last Saturday was the objective of a party of Putaruru motorists who made the trip through to the Hawke's Bay centre, via Taupo, in Mr. H. Leslie's car. Leaving Putaruru about 8.30 a.m. on Friday, they lunched at Taupo and arrived at the Tarawera hotel about 4.30 p.m. for the night. Starting after breakfast next morning, they reached Napier about three hours later. The return trip was started at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday and completed at 4.30 p.m. on Monday, the night being spent as before at Tarawera. The road throughout provided very satisfactory travelling; in fact the worst portion, which, however, was not particularly bad, was between Putaruru and Lichfield, where traffic to Putaruru concentrates. The Mangaiti hill presented no particular difficulty. The trip, one way, occupied about nine hours' actual travelling time.
