At Wednesday night’s meeting of the Matamata Town Board an informal inquiry was received from the northern suburb as to what the esttmated cost would be of a main from the Turanga-o-moana junction to Waharoa. A suggestion,, that the Puketutu bridge may need temporary strengthening to allow it to carry the traffic pending the erection of the now concrete structure was referred to the engineer at Wednesday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council by Cr. H. Rollett, who stated that he himself had not seen the bridge lately, but this suggestion had been made to him. Requests for Government grants and subsidies for road and bridge work should bo forwarded to the county engineer before June 15 next. An announcement to this effect was made by the Chairman, Cr. J. W. Anderson, at last Wednesday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council, lie asking that each councillor submit the list of grants and subsidies required in his riding to the engineer by that date. The chairman, Cr. J. W. Anderson, asked tlie members at Wednesday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council ho decide during the next month what general rate each would -equire in his riding for the current financial year, it being /necessary soon ♦0 take 1 steps to, strike tho rate. A suggestion by Cr. J. Pohlen that on each rate notice sent out this yeai the amount, of the hospital and charitable aid levy should he shown separately, so that each ratepayer would know exactly what he paid for this mu-pose, was referred to the clerk.

The question of composite traffic 'icenses for. areas which include parts of several local clodies’ districts isproving a wide one. The matter arose some time ago in regard to the Cambridge area, where besides the Cambridge Borough Council,- tho Matanata County iCouncil, and the Waipa County Council, several other smaller local bodies have jurisdiction, each body demanding a license fee from each individual carrier or carrying firm located in Cambridge and plying for hire throughout the adjoining areas. To remedy this state of affairs, about which tho carriers complained, a conference of the local bodies concerned Was held at Cambridge and a scale of composite fees there agreed to. However, the Waipa County Council later refused its ratification, whereupon Cr. S. H. Judd, of the Matamata County Council, waited on it to endeavour to come to a finality. The Waipa Council pointed out that The Waipa Council pointed out that for it the question of composite licenses applied not only to tho Cambridge area! but also to the areas round Hamilton and Te Awamutu, and in a letter to the Matamata County Council on Wednesday, suggested a conference at Hamilton during the Winter Show week of all the loral bodies concerned in anv of these three areps, with p view to a complete scheme .being -adopted. The Matamata County Council deckl'd! to replv that, if the Waipa Councjl convened such a conference it would be pleased to send a delegate.
