GENERAL ITEMS.

The work done gratuitously by Mr. J. Price, of Matamata, for the ratepayers of the Matamata county and other objecting areas in organising the successful opposition campaign against the Thames harbour loan proposals has been recognised by the Putaruru District Development Board in the unanimobs according of a hearty vote of thanks from that organisation to Mr. Price for his efforts in this respect. Members remarked that Mr. Price had evinced a most admirable and generous public spirit in thus giving of his ability and time so unsparingly. The traffic bridge to bo erected over (lie Waikato river by (he Public Works Department below Arapuni was a subject brought forward by Cr. E. J. Darby at the County Council meet ing on Wednesday. He stated that there were three sites for this bridge, two on low levels and one on the high level. The Public Works Department; seemed minded to adopt one oil the low level in that it held the structure would lie temporary only, the permanent bridge being over the top of the dam. Inquiry, however, showed that the dam, with the necessary adjoining bridge over the headrace, would probably involve a tortuous crossing. He therefore would ask the Council to lodge a request for the erection of a high-level bridge in the first place. 'Plie Council agreed to do this.

Tt is understood that on the completion of the Horahora-Arapuni newer line the Government is prepared to sell power at the Arapuni sub-station to the Thames Valley Power Board for the reticulation of the Pukcturua district. Cr. Darby asked for the support of C.i£. J. W. Anderson and J. Pohlcn, as members of the Power Board, in the project. “ Gorse has made its appearance on the education reserve at Tokoroa.” said Cr. K. S. Cox at Wednesday’s meeting of (he Matamata County Council. “Tt could he eradicated now for Ihe expenditure of a few shillings, but if allowdd to spread for the next (wo years or so the work wjll cost pounds.” On the, recommendation of the chairman it was resolved to advise the Education Board to have the work done at once. Cr. E. J. Darby drew attention to absentee owners’ land, “ which produce nothing hut noxious weeds and rabbits.” Other members said this was a matter for the stock inspector to deal with. Cr. Darby said this land too was education reserve and it was agreed that specific cases could thus he referred to the Education Board.
