Cr. Stopford gave notice that a petition would be put before the Council at its next meeting, from Okoroire set- ' tiers, asking for the erection of a new bridge. He moved that the engineer 5-—<ffaw up' an estimate of the cost for the guidance of the Council.—Agreed to. ENGINEER’S REPORT.. The engineer of the Matamata County, Mr. F. Shannon, submitted liis report for the months, as follows: In the Matamata Riding, grader work, sanding, and repairs have been carried out-on Morgan’s Road, Gunn’s Road, Road, by Hutche* sojj’s gang. Ditches are being cleared ___fiul-by—Hurrell, and general surface isjaeing attended to by O’Neill. Emslie has been engaged in repairing the bridge near thc;old creamery at Okauife. This was' completed last ■week, but owing to the extraordinary rainfall there'on Sunday, a washout ; occured at the approaches. This has been attended to. In the'Patetere Riding, Thomson - has completed the gravelling and re- ~ pairs on the Cambridge Road, and has shifted camp 'to Pairere, and is now engaged in widening a rocky point on ** the Cambridge Road, near Hora Hora, necessitated by a slip on the outer side of the road caused by flooding in the Waikato River on Sunday night. Marsh has been engaged in surface
work, but lias left the Council’s employ to take other work. Dihar has boon engaged in surface work at Te Poi and Omahine, but has been handicapped for wont of a iiglit. dray. To remedy this I have ordered a surfaceman’s dray from Pomeroy and Co. Enislie has completed the groynes and protection work at the Omahine Bridge. In the Taotaoroa Riding, grader work and repairs have been carried out by Mahood. In company with Mr. Potts, I was over the whole of the Riding during the month, and noted the requirements, and these will be attended to when tho weather improves, and funds and labour are avadahle. On the Cambridge Road, near Pemberton’s Hill, the bridge is in a very decayed condition. Notices have been posted to the effect that it is unsafe for traffic. If the funds will allow, this bridge should he renewed with a concrete culvert, and the road raised and straightened by taking off the points. I shall- take the levels and prepare estimates of the work next week.
In the Maungatautari Riding Stokes lias been engaged in surface work. A very old and decayed small bridge at Fisher's deviation was carried away by the flood on Sunday. 1 arranged for n temporary crossing pending the erection of o new bridge. This bridge, should be renewed by a concrete culvert if possible. In the I’utaruni Riding Henderson has completed the formation on the road to the Salvation Army’s Institute —a distance of 3 miles and 8 chains. The road from Lichfield to Bartholomew's siding lias been reformed with the grader. Henderson lias been instructed to grade the road from Pukcturua to the Waikato Bridge, where required, and to form the road from Putaruru to the proposed saleyards. Slips on the Ngatiri-Okohiriki Rond has caused Aelay in its completion, and the rock njet with makes slow going, but is nearing completion. Strickland is making fair progress with his quarrying contract at Putaruru.
