WAOTU.
A very enjoyable evening’s entertainment was given by the Waotu-school children on Friday last, every child attending the school taking part. A piece entitled “Hans and the Cats” was staged. The costumes were the work of Mrs Proctor, and were very well got up. Special mention must be made of those that took the part of flowers. The girls were dressed to represent pansies, the dress being the leaves and the hat the flowers, and when they bowed their heads the effect was most real. One small native boy gave a haka which almost brought down the house. The Old Miller, Fairy Queen, Hans and the Queen of Cats filled their parts well, and the whole piece went through without a hitch. The number of people attending was a record for Waotu, many coming over twenty miles. A sum of £l4 18s was collected at the door, which goes towards buying a piano for the school. Groat praise is due to the teachers, Mr and Mrs Proctor, who must have put in many hours of hard work in preparing the dresses and teaching the children their parts. The evening ended with a dance.
