CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Monthly Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening, the president, Mr J. Buchanan, occupying the chair. The action of the chairman and secretary (Mr H. W. Smales), who, on short notice, had met the delegates from the Town Board and the local branch of the Fanners’ Union re the erection of letter-boxes at the Glaxo factory, public school and Pomeroy’s corner, also with regard to a cottage hospital, was ondursed. The president also reported that he and the secretary had waited upon the postmaster re telephones and a “ mail sorted ” notice being placed in the private box lobby, and stated that the matter would be given consideration. CONSTABLE’S RESIDENCE. The secretary reported that he had forwarded a letter to the Hon. W. H. Herries, M.P., asking him to keep the matter of the erection of a constable’s house and courthouse in Matamata in mind when the estimates were being considered. It was suggested that £2OOO would be required. TOWN SECTIONS. The letter regarding the sale of town sections received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands on August 20th, stating that these would be offered for sale not later than September 30th, was re-read as nothing further had been done in the matter. —The secretary was instructed to again communicate with the Lands Department. WORKERS’ DWELLINGS. Mr E. G. Clarke reported very fully on the matter of workers’ dwellings, and it was decided to ascertain the number and names of those residents anxious to obtain dwellings under the scheme. The Chamber further resolved to call a public meeting, to be addressed by Mr Clarke, and to forward the result to the Department, urging upon it the necessity for further allocations of money for workers’ dwellings. CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. •»

It was resolved that the business people of the town be recommended to observe Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of Christmas and New Year weeks as close holidays. SANITARY. Mr W. Gale gave notice to move at appoint a sanitary inspector.
