WORK IN MATAMATA COUNTY

Engineer's Report, The -engineer, Mr. F. Shannon, submitted his report for the month (o the Mtttamata County Council, as follows: Tin.' extraordinary rainfall at the end of August rendered u considerable nmoiint of repairs and surface work necessary in many parts of the county, and .several washouts have taken place, but not of a serious nature. All these matters have been attended to. In the Matainata Riding Hutclieson and his gang have boon engaged in trimming up the sanded roads with the grader, doing repairs, and formation on Morgan's "road, and are procedure to do sanding on the hill near Johnson's. ONeill has been engaged in surface work. The heavy rain caused some large slips on the- road giving access to Moore's sections. I have arranged with Graveson to remove the slips and widen the road where the lower side Had slipped into the creek. The committee set up to e.msider new by-laws for the county ine! at Matamala and went carefully into the matter, and the result of our deliberations will come before you today for consideration. I'll Iho I'atetere Riding, Thomson, with the county teams, has been engaged in gravelling and repairs on the Thau to Cambridge Road, and repaired a washout, in the road near Ilorahora Rapids. They arc next proceeding with sanding and repairs on the I'aircre to Hinuera Road. Laud has been employed filling in holes on the roads near Hinuera station. In regard to the protection work required at the Omahina Bridge, .1. Elmslcy is carrying out the work. Mr. Weeks has notified me that he has more work on his farm than he can find time to accomplish, and wished to be relieved from the county work; 1 therefore beg to recommend that J. Erasley be appointed to the position vacated by Mr. Vrtcks. 11. Marsh has been engaged in surface work in the riding during the month.

In the Taptaoroa Riding Mahood has completed sanding and grader work, ami I instructed him "to do some repairs on the Cambridge-Tirau Road. In the Mnungatautiri Riding Stokes lias been engaged in surface work. In Die Putaruru Riding, Henderson's gang has nearly completed the Ngatiri-Okohoriki Road, a washout caused by the heavy rain has caused some delay. With regard to Sladegully's Road, Bissett's work was too expensive. 1 relieved him and sent Henderson out to complete, the job; the'road is now finished in a satisfactory manner. Henderson is now engaged doing a few days' work giving access to the property worked by the Salvation Army. The Army has contributed an amount of free labour on this road, so J thought it a reasonable, thing to give them a few days' work when the grader was in the locality. In company with Councillor Barnett I inspected the proposed road to give Mr. Stringer direct, access to Waotu. A good line of road can be obtained, and the formation carried out at a very moderate cost. We saw Mr. Stringer and advised him to try and arrange terms with Mr, Rollett, before, any attempt was made to secure, the road through the native land.
