MATAMATA TOWN BOARD.
Fortnightly Meeting. The fortnightly meeting of the Matamata Town Board was held on Monday evoning, the chairman, Mr J. Prico, presiding. Messrs J. Mclntyre, J. F. Vosper and W. A. Gordon were also present. SYMPATHY. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting, the chairman moved a voto of sympathy with the wife and family of the lato J. P. Fitzgerald. In doing so, Mr Prico statod the regret of tlio townspeople in the demise of such a public-spirited citizon, who had been a friend to the district and his fellow men. THE PUBLIC HALL. Mr J. Pohlen waited upon the board, as chairman of the public hall trustees, stating that the opinion of the trustees was in favour of handing the hall over to the Town hoard. He stated that the hall and picture plant were froe of debt and was a sound business proposition. The chairman said, personally, he was quite agreeable for the board to receive the hall as a gift to the town. There was no doubt but that the hall would be an asset, and the people owed a debt of gratitude to those members of the hall committee who had guided the fortunes of the project for a matter of about eight years. The work that the committee had done could not bo estimated, but the hall would remain a monument to their labours. Mr J. F. Vosper endorsed the chairman's remarks. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided that the board take over the property and plant. COTTAGE HOSPITAL. The Matamata County council advised that it thought it little use of making ovortuies for the erection of a cottage hospital at Matamata, but suggested, and promised to support, a movement for the establishment of a medical association and a maternity homo in the town. The chairman and Mr Gordon wore appointed members of a committee to forward the proposal to establish a cottage hospital. A LETTER-BOX. The Matamata branch of the Farmers' Union wrote urging the necessity of having a post office letter-box erected at the Glaxo factory, and suggested that the board appoint a deputy to wait, with others, upon the postmaster at Matamata in connection with the matter. —Two members were appointed, it being decided to ask for several letter-boxes instead of one. WAR MEMORIAL. The Matamata County council advised that it had decided to grant £2OO, on the basis of a £ for £ subsidy, from the Matamata riding funds for the purpose of erecting a war momorial at Matamata, on the condition that a framed photo (if obtainable) of soldiers from the riding who went to the war shall be hung in the library. SANITARY SITE. The Public Trust Office wrote asking whether the board had decided to pay the price asked—£7s per acre —for the purchase of the sanitary site. PEACE CELEBRATIONS. The cost of the Matamata peace celebrations was £llß 9s Id, reported the town clerk. Of this amount £49 had been guaranteed by the county and outside districts. The board decided to donate £lO to the funds of the Peace Celebrations Committee. CONCRETE FOOTPATHS. With the view to creating a general and uniform concrete footpath, the board decided to proceed with the manufacture of concrete slabs for demonstration on a piece of footpath. The idea was that residents in the main parts of the town would avail themselves of the opportunity to acquire a good footpath by contributing part of the cost.
