PUTARURU.
Mr J..C. Tomlin has commenced' work with plough and motor tractor with levelling a hilly section next the hall. The site will be subdivided into business sections, and on completion of the work in hand will be offered for sale. It is estimated that the work of levellingwill take a year. Mr D. Fj. Connell, of Papakura, has been appointed statipnmastor at Putaruru and Mr R. J. Buchanan, stationmaster, Putaruru, has been transferred to the Penrose station. Mr Neil Johnson has sold his farm of 425 acres at Putaruru to Mr G. Jensen, of Kimbolton. Mr W. Cron has sold 695 acres of his farm, formerly owned by Mr A.. T. Scrivener, to Mr A. Donovan.
Preparations have been completed for the hard-up social to be held in the Putaruru hall to-mor-row (Friday) evening, and the indications are that the function will be a pronounced success. The experience of being unable to obtain milk and little butter is a common one in Putaruru at present, although the town is the centre of a dairying district. Condensed milk is served to travellers, and it is stated that butter is very difficult to obtain in tho town.
There is a great scarcity of accommodation in Putaruru, and hardly a day passes when travelers are not turned away from the hotel and boardinghouse. On Monday evening both places were filled and seven travellers intending to put up at Putaruru were compelled to go to Rotorua for accommodation. The position is most acute. It is understood that the Putaruru hotel will be rebuilt in brick after the elections, if prohibition is not carried. Mr A. Oldham, candidate for parliamentary honors for tho Rotorua seat at the forthcoming elections, visited Putaruru and Tirau this week in connection with his campaign.
