PUTARURU.

Mr W. H. Barnett, Wellington, who has boon for many yoars in the service of tlio G.P.0., has arrived in Putaruru and has taken up farming. An access to the site acquired by the Putaruru Saleyards Coy. has now been securod from SeniorSorgt. Cummings, and the work of orecting the saleyards is to bo put in hand immediately. Mr and Mrs J. Scott, lato of Ngarua, who are well-known in Matamata, have purchased property formerly owned by SeniorSergt. Cummings, and are now residing in Putaruru. Mr J. Henshaw is orecting a dwelling-house on a site within easy distance of the Pataruru Post Office. The house will be occupied by Mr Henshaw when completed. Mr J. Edwards is building a cottage close to the Putaruru Post Office. A social and dance to welcome homo Sergeant J. F. Peters, M.M., was held hero recently, when a a most enjoyable time was spent. There was a goo,d attendance. Sergeant Peters left New Zealand with the thirteenth reinforcements and was promoted sergeant in France, afterwards acting a 6 sergeant-major when he was wounded. He was recommended for a commission, but he was again wounded very seriously. The armistice was signed ; consequently the recommendation was not given effect to. Sergeant Peters is still in hospital at Rotorua but is progressing favorably. He was on seven days leave when the social was tendered him. The entertainment was contributed to by Mrs Pearson, Miss Ibbotson, and Messrs R. Brown, Knox and Cray. MiDarby presided at the piano. Mr Lipscombe was chairman and welcomed the guest on behalf of the residents. Mr F. C. Barnett also gave an address of welcome. Good progress is being made by Mr M. Gilbride in breaking in his newly acquired property at Putaruru. The farm consists of 383 acres and a largo area is swampy, The swamp growth is being buried and preparations are in hand for the sowing of a big crop of swedes. Mr Gilbride is very pleased with his purchase and considers the land as good as any in the Waikato. He just completed the erection of a house on the property. Mr McGowan, late manager of the Puketurua Dairy factory, is leaving Putaruru, having sold his property. Mr and Mrs McGowan will live in Morrinsville temporarily. Mrs W. Rogers lias sold her property at Putaruru for £3O per acre, and is leaving for a prolonged holiday at Invercargill. Mr N. Fitzhorbort, of Palmerston North, has purchased Mrs Rogers’ farm, and is going to remove to Putaruru shortly.'

Forty Holstein dairy cattle from Taranaki have just been placed by Mr C. G. Allen, on his farm at Putarurn..

Mr A. Scrivener, of Putaruru, is leaving that district on the 10th inst, and will reside in Morrinsville. Mr W. Cron, of Putaruru, has purchased Mr Scrivener’s place. Mr C. G. Allen, of Putaru-ru, collided with a disc harrow last week and contracted blood poisoning. He was removed to the Waikato Hospital where he is making good progress towards recovery. Messrs Ruth and Dodd have commenced chaff-cutting with their plant at Putaruru. They have completed 202 tons at Litchfield and 150 tons} at Puketurua. The quality of the chaff cut has been excellent.

MrL. D.Nathan has disposed of a 23 acre farm at Putaruru to Mr J. C. Tomlin, of Overdale. While racing on ponies on Mr G. Allen’s property at Putaruru on Sunday last, Mr Albert Smith, farm manager, was caught between a horse trough and a fencing post. He was thrown from his horse and at first it was thought he was seriously injured. Examination proved that Mr Smith had escaped with a severe shaking and bruising. Urgent appeals for clothing and money for the use of the poor of Auckland have been made by Sister Esthor, who carries on the noble work of alleviating the distress among the indigent people of the city. With a view to assisting this worthy cause Mr J. Rolfe, of Putaruru, is organising a plain and fancy dross ball to be held in the Putaruru hall on Friday evening, the 20th inst. The function is being arranged on an elaborate scale with orchestral music and a fine supper, and the object should moot with tho hearty support of settlers for miles around.
