Brief Mention of all Minor Happenings in Matamata and Vicinity.

Private F. G. Devey, who returned on Saturday by the “ Zgalandia,” after two years ser vice, arrived in Matamata on Tuesday. The fortnighly meeting of the Matamata Town board was adjourned from Monday until tonight. The main business for discussion is the saleyards site. The Rev. A. E. Jefferson has been appointed to the Matamata Methodist church. Mr J. Common has been appointed missioner for the district. The Matamata Racing club was not allowed March 27th on which to hold its races. Thursday, April 3rd has now been ] applied for.

The monthly meeting of the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ Union is being held to-morrow night.

Among the prize winners at the Morrinsville show yesterday were Mr I. H. McNair (Holstein cattle) and Mr J. McSweeney (horses).

A crop of, wheat has just been stacked by Mr C. Wallace, grown on his property on the Waharoa road, which is estimated to run about forty bushels to the acre.

The first Morrinsville show was held yesterday, being officially opened by the Hon. W. H. Herries M.P. The attendance was particularly large and included a number of Matamata people.

A little boy named Reynolds, son of Mr Reynolds, of Peria, met with an accident on Tuesday. He was playing with another boy and was thrown to the ground fracturing his left shoulder. Dr Carolan attended the sufferer.

The locally owned horse, Ring Lupin, competed on both days at the Te Aroha races, but did not get in the money. Those who saw the chestnut gallop state that the horse was not his former self. The racing should do him good.

A man named Thomas Grayson, in the employ of Mr S. Salisbury, Tower road, was severely injured last week through being kicked by a horse. He was attended by Dr. Carolan and sent in to the Waikato hospital. The latest reports state he is progressing favorably. At Tokoroa, on Friday, Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister for Lands, stated that important dcvelopements were pending in connection with Crown Lands and the Settlement of soldiers. The Minister appeared to refer to the Crown Lands outside Putaruru, but was not definite.

The road surfaceman, recently engaged by the Town board, has been devoting his work to cleaning up the grass off the town footpaths, and filling in low places in the main street. The change is greatly appreciated by the business people and residents generally.

A letter was read at a commit tee meeting of the Racing club last week from Messrs Hampson and Bell stating that they would bp pleased to donate a fifteen guinea cup for the first Matamata cup race. The offer was accepted with thanks. This will bring the value of the race up to about £56.

An instance of the delay which occurs in the transmission of cables was brought to light yesterday, when a well-known resident received a cable from a Matamata soldior, which was forward from Brierfield, Lancashire, on February 24th. This cable had taken nine days to reach its destination. Tho soldier will naturally, for once, think his friend has failed him.

Settlers who contemplate subdividing and roading their properties will be pleased to learn that Messrs Lockie Gannon, civil and consulting engineer, and John K. Ledger, licensed surveyor, have commence practice in Matamata. They may be consulted at Messrs Hampson and Bell’s office. Mr Gannon has just been appointed to prepare a water supply for the Matamata Town board, arid is also engineer to a large number of local bodies. Pomeroy and Co's replace. Saddle and bridle lost.
