SHIFTING THE SALEYARDS.
Discussion by Town Board. A discussion on the matter of shifting the saleyards took place at the meeting of Matamata Town board on Monday evening when the following letter from the Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Auctioneering Co. was read Yours of the 15th to hand. We have no intention of shifting our saleyards in Matamata. Some months ago we interviewed the chairman of your branch with reference to the probability of the Town board asking us to move the yards, and we were given to understand that this was not at all likely to happen. We are spending a large amount on these yards, almost at once, in concreting, and we certainly anticipate no trouble with your board with the yards in the present position." Mr Vosper took exception to the chairman committing the board as to not being likely to ask for the yards to be shifted. Personally he thought the yards should be removed further out. The chairman: I’ll stand before the board on my action. The representatives of the company met me and asked me my opinion, and as to whether 1 had ever heard'the shifting of the yards discussed. I had not and I said so. In any case I am quite at liberty to give my opinion. lam prepared to put a motion to the board or go to the people on the question, and I’m certain that they would vote against the shifting of the yards. Mr Vosper: I quite see your meaning, but I think the representatives have taken too much out of your remarks. I believe the people would vote for the yards to be shifted. I take great exception to the yards being there. Once the yards are concreted they are not likely to be shifted. The chairman : The yards are alright, so Jong as we get a stock road along the back. Mr Vosper: Yes, that means through my property and I take exception to it. The chairman: Its got to come. Regarding the incident under notice I did not seek the representatives, they sought me. Mr Vosper: Because you are Why did they not seek out other members of the board. I live alongside the yards and I think I should have been consulted. The chairman : I didn’t want to see them. At any rate you can easily settle the question. — Propose a motion that a vote be taken.
Mr Vosper: I would, only there are only a few members present, and it might not get seconded. The stock left in the yards overnight are a nuisance to the residents. The chairman: You have your remedy for that—iinform the polico. My opinion is that the yards are in the proper place. If they are shifteed other people will suffer from the noise, so why inflict it on them.
Mr Vosper: If it was a full meeting I would move that the matter be put to a vote of the people. The chairman: Very well; I’ll move that the matter be discussed at next meeting. Mr Vosper: I’ll second it. The motion was carried.
