Mr and Mrs W. Tootill, of Auckland, are at present on a visit to Mr and Mrs W. T. Darby, at Matamata. ■>- At Putaruru, on/Tuesday Mr J. A. Young M.fer announced that he intonded/contesting his present S'sat/(Waikato) at next election/ 1 The old Harvest Home hymns will bo sung in the Matamata Methodist church on Sunday next, when two Harvest Thanksgiving Services will be held. The Rev. C. H. Kendon will be the preacher. Mr A. E. Crowley, a well known Taranaki contractor, was on a visit to Matamata friends this week. He expressed surprise a t the progress made by the town and country' since his previous visit, and ekpressed himself as having enjoyed the trip immensely. $ The adherents of the Matamata ' Anglican church shortly intend to erect a vicarage at Matamata, and to help raise funds for the purpose the. Ladies Guild will hold a. bazaar in May. An entertainment will also be held towards the end of this month. A farmer of the district has asked us to warn settlers against the statements used by a gentleman who is or has been travelling the district with a book for sale to farmers. Inquiries have been made of a certain Government department, to which the agent is alleged to claim to be attached, and the reply is that they have no knowledge of the man. Upon making inquiries we are informed that the man has now left the district. Speaking at Putaruru on Tuesday Mr J. A. Young M.P. deprecated the inactivity of the Government in connection with land development. He stated that there were about 20 young members of Parliament, he was one, who had prepared a policy, and failing a progressive move by the older members, were prepared to go before the electors with it. The National Governmenfc'had outlived its usefulness, and the people were tired of it. The young members referred to were prepared to sink or swim with their policy. The remarks were greeted with loud applause. Prior to leaving Matamata last Mr and Mrs R. Carnachan were entertained by the staff of the Matamata High school, Technical school, and friends in Mrs J. Price’s residence. In the course of the afternoon presentations were made to both guests, Mrß Carnachan receiving a handsome book, and her husband a pocket wallet (morocco). Afternoon tea was partaken of, and several complimentary addresses were made. Among the speakers were Miss Battersby (who made the presentations) and Rev. R. W. Jackson. Mr Carnachan replied, thanking the friends for the presents and stating how much he and his wife regretted leaving the district, which they had come to appreciate so much. Dr Carolan—notice. Waite, painter, paperhanger etc., of Morrinsville —announcement this issue. Messrs Buchanan and Purnell, solicitors notify that they have * commenced practice as solicitors in Matamata. Mr Buchanan, who has purchased the residence of Mr R. Hill, will control the business of the Matamata branch, Mr Purnell remaining at Thames.
