NEW YEAR’S RACES. The Tirau Racing club’s annual race meeting was held on New Year’s Day. The weather was not ideal, several showers falling during the day, but nevertheless the attendance was large. The results of the races were : Maiden hack, 12i sovs. (six furlongs).—Mr E. Dobbs’ Arawa 9.10 1, Mr P. Timete’s Rangi Pai 9.7 2, Mr H. T. Reilly’s Saloon 9.10 3. Also started Peer Rosa, Tukelet and Bang. Shorts handicap, 12k6 sovs. (5 furlongs).—Mr H. Heales’ Campaign 10.12 1, Mr H. T. Reilly’s Saloon 8.10 2, Mr J. F. Holwell’s Pairere 9.4 2. Also started Escapement and Papamarama. Tirau handicap, 20 sovs. (11miles).—Mr C. Pentito’s To Ora 7.121, Mr R. Burke’s Grey Opal Bst 2, Mr W. Livingstone’s Silver Lode 8.9 3. Also started Keystone and Fire. Ladies’ bracelet of 10 gns. (6 furlongs).—Mr W. Willoughby’s Geranium lOst 1, Mr McArthurs Soldiers’ Queen lO.st 2, Mr G. Wine’s General Soultgelding lOst 3. Also started Sphinx and Brown Soult. County handicap, 15 sovs.—Mr C. Pentito’s Lismore 9.6 1, Mr H. Heale’s Campaign 10.12 2, Mr P. Timeto’s Rangi Pai 8.10 3. Also started Gold Bird, Pairere and Peer Rosa. Settlers’ handicap, 10 sovs. (7 furlongs). —Messrs H. Conder and R. Mateer’s Tukelet list 1, Mr Selby’s Escapement 11.4 2, Mr A. Dihar’s Fire 11.11 3. The only starters. Welter handicap, VIM sovs. (1 mile).—Mr R. Burke’s Grey Opal 9st 1, Mr F. Marshall’s Lady Elstow 9st 1, Mr Dobb’s Arawa 9.7 3. Also started Keystone, Waerenga and Papamarama.
