Brief Mention of all Minor Happenings in Matamata and Vicinity.

Owing to Boxing Day falling on Thursday the “Record” will be published on Monday of next week. We would ask advertisers to kindly note this fact. The annual meeting of the Matamata County council was held yesterday. A full report will appear in Monday’s issue. Hay-making is now in full swing throughout the Matamata district. There are a number of quite good crops already harvested. The meeting of the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ union to have been held to-morrow night has been postponed.

Miss Kneebone, daughter of Mrs J. Kneebone and the late Mr J. Kneebone, of Hinuera, died at Hinuera on Tuesday. Deceased, who was 22 years of age, had been ailing for some considerable time. All the pupils of Std. YI. of the Matamata school passed the recent examinations with proficiency, entitling them to free secondary education. The names of the pupils are Rose Egan, Hazel Green, “Libby” Simpson, Eunice Mogford, Myrtle Robinson, H. Yosper, C. Edwards, E. Hall and C. Vincent. The death of Elsie Annie, the fifteen-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs C. W. White, of Waliaroa, occurred at the Hamilton hospital on Friday, the cause being appendicitis. The remains were interred at Matamata cemetery on Sunday, the cortege being a very long one. There were also many floral tributes, the deceased being well-known in Matamata. Among those who are due to return to New Zealand by the next transport is Nurse Lillie Burke, sister of Mr R. Burke, of Matamata. Nurse Burke left New Zealand with the first batch of New Zealand nurses, and with the exception of a month’s leave, has seen continuous service. She has a record of being the New Zealand nurse with the longest service, and has been awarded the meritorious service medal. A sister, Miss Ivy Burke is still on active service, while a brother, Trover “ Jim ” Burke, is apparently still a prisoner of war. Wristlet watch lost. Companion help required.
