PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL
October Meeting. The following business of interest to this district was transacted at the Piako Count} 7 council meeting on Monday: — LABORERS’ DEMANDS. The Auckland Employers’ association forwarded particulars of new demands to bo made by the Laborers’ union. A meeting of delegates from all local bodies was being held in Auckland on November 13th, and the council was asked to appoint a delegate. Cr. Walters thought the present award should stand, especially as there were prospects of an early place. Demands for increased wages from all unions should be reviewed together. This would be preferable to taking all the cases piece-meal. The chairman was appointed the council’s delegate, and if unable to go to appoint one of the councillors us his substitute. TE AROHA TRAFFICBRIDGE The Minister of Public Works was not prepared to give a certificate that the whole of the Te Aroha bridge required re-build-ing. He admitted that it was desirable that the bridge should be widened. The mayor of Te Aroha waited on the council and asked if ity was prepared to go in with the Borough council to raise a loan from the Public Trustee. Referring to the Minister’s letter he said that it was apparent a new bridge was necessary, 1 and was more economical than altering and interfering with the present structure. The cost of a concrete bridge had been estimated at £6OOO. The chairman said the Ohinemuri County council, as well as the Matamata County council, should contribute to the cost. He moved that if the Matamata and Ohinemuri counties came in with the Piako County council it should contribute its share, .40 per cent. Councillors expressed the opinion that to some portions of the Ohinemuri county the bridge was of more use than to many parts of the Piako county. Cr. Walters seconded the motion which was carried. The clerk was instructed to write to the Matamata and Ohinemuri County councils. PIAKOITI VALLEY ROAD. It was decided to procure the metal for this road from Taringamutu, the engineer stating the metal was first class. It was decided to call for tenders for the supply of this metal, some 3 miles, and that the riding member and engineer be authorised to call for tenders for carting. Cr. Fitzgerald said there was any amount of metal at Taringa- i mutu, and it was of good quality. ( Cr. A. Orr asked if this metal was to be used for the Motumaoho road. The engineer said it depended if they could get metal from Tirohia.
