TIRAU.

PRESENTATION TO QUEENS. A social evening was held in the Tirau hall on Friday, October 18th. The three riding queens of Tirau, Okoroire, and Hinuera, were each presented with a brooch in recognition of the;'good work done by them in the campaign and to commemorate the occasion. Despite bad weather, there was a good attendance and a pleasant evening was spent in dancing, musical items being rendered by Mrs Bear and Miss Bamford. In presenting the brooches, Mr J. W. Anderson spoke of the good work rendered by the queens. He also said that money had come in above expectations. He mentioned the fine record of Te Awamutu in their straight-out giving campaign raising £2 8s per head, but Matamata County had exceeded this, raising £2 10s 4d per head. However, in Mr Anderson’s opinion this was very little compared to what the mothers of the country had given. Mr Litchfield responded for the Tirau queen, and (in the absence of Mr Browne) Mr Anderson for the Hinuera queen. The Okoroire queen was absent owing to illness. During the evening Mr Anderson also made a presentation of a valuable ladies’ dressing case (complete) to Miss M. Stewart who had acted as secretary through the campaign. He said, when the campaign opened it was decided to appoint a paid secretary. When the campaign was over Miss Stewart refused the money so that it was resolved to make her a presentation, the money for which was raised by voluntary contributions. Mr Anderson referred to the capable manner in which the duties had been carried out, and said as much as Miss Stewart would value the present, she would appreciate still more the assurance that she had won the respect and esteem of all who had been associated with her throughout the campaign. Mr Anderson’s remarks were greeted with pronounced applause.
