Brief Mention of all Minor Happenings in Matamata and Vicinity.

Mr J. Ryan, of Te Avoha, is at present on a visit to his sister Mrs J. McSweeney, at Matamata' Miss M. Cummings, of the " Value House "who has been an inmate of a private hospital, in Auckland for some weeks, is expected to return home this week Mrs A. Beeson, who last week received the news of the death of her son, Basil, (killed inaction) is expected to return on a visit to Matamata with Mr and Mrs E. Beeson, who have been in Auckland. Mrs Jack Finnerty, of Matamata, received news on Saturday that her brother, Private J. Hill, of Morrinsville, had been wounded in the shoulder and arm. Mrs Finnerty had previously lost her .husband and a brother, both killed in action. We offer our sympathy. A most popular action was that of the chairman of the riding executive on Friday night, when he called upon Mrs W. Darby to accept a beautiful bouquet as a small token of appreciation of the orchestra's work during the carnival campaign. Mr Price said the whole district recognised what it had meant to the cam- i paign and appreciated the players accordingly. Musical honors were accorded Mr and Mrs Darby and Mr Cummings.

The Turanga-o-moana representative for the Blue queen has a thanks notice in this issue.

The Shetland pony raffled on behalf of the Matamata queen was drawn for last Friday, Miss F. Downie, being the winner. A meeting of all interested in providing Christmas gifts for boys from the Matamata district at the front will be held in the Matamata Public hall on Tuesday next at 2.30 p.m.

We understand Mr Sefton Banks, of Matamata, has disposed of his steeplechaser Tirau at a figure running into half a "thou." The gelding won a race at Egmont last week, and was sold afterward. Tirau won three races for Mr Banks.

We understand that no complaints were made by the Health Inspector re tho drains at theWaikato Co-op. Cheese Co.'s Matamata factory, but a suggestion was offered that the soakage dumps be covered in and another provided to cope with the drainage in the flush of the season.

Signaller L. R. Wallace, 48 specialists, son of Mr C. Wallace, of Waharoa road, was home on special leave last week, and left again for camp on Monday. Another soldier to visit the district is Private H. Avard, a district returned boy, who had a few days leave from the Auckland hospital.

An amusing incident concerning the Hon. G. W. Russell and a porter unconcious of the Minister's identity, is being related hy a Matamata business man who was a witness to it recently. It appears the Minister was late for his train at Frankton, and all' was bustle and hurry. The porter was told to take the luggage to the great one's car. " Yes, Sir " he said, turning to the Minister, "Are you travelling first or second."

Attention is drawn to the great display of spring and summer goods opening up at the " Value " House. While in Auckland Miss Cummings has made large purchases of the latest fashionable goods which will be sold at less than Hamilton prices. The recent alterations and additions to the business premises will mean more room for display, and thus the show to be held on October 15th and 16th will be better than ever.

Mr J. A. Clothier, having disposed of his interest at Elstow, is no longer a dairy man. This unfortunately means his retirement from the board of directors of Te Aroha District Co-op. Dairy Co., and at a meeting of directors this week, Mr Clothier announced his retirement. His co-directors, in accepting his resignation, referred in terms of praise to the interest and attention ,he had always shown as a director of the company, and for the last two years as chaiiman. He was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks. Mr John D. Mackay, of Waihou, has been appointed chairman of directors in his stead. Mr Mackay is a progressive young farmer of the right type and should prove a worthy successor to previous occupants of the chairman's position in the Te Aroha District Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd.—News. A capable general required. Lad able to milk requires situation. Rice-meal, pea-meal and maizemeal at low prices from Wallace and Co. A six roomed house in Auckland is offered in exchange for mortgage, property or a motor car.
