CAMPAIGN FINAL

Entertained. \jJDk&- final function in connection with, the Queen carnival campaign, organised by the Matamata riding executive, was held in the Matamata town hall on Friday last. There was a very large attendance, and the evening throughout was highly successful. The seats of honor were occupied by the five riding queens, and the only visiting queen, Miss Litchfield, of Tirau. The queen of the county, Mrs Darby, occupied the "centre seat, withy the queens of Peria (Mrs Blennerhassett), Taihoa (Mrs Gould), Waharoa (Mrs ''A»v;\L Tong), Turanga-o-moana (Mrs H. Harding), and Tirau (Miss Litchfield), ,on each side of her.; The main amusement of the evening was dancing for which Mr : W. Darby had provided a full orchestra, composed of Mrs Darby (piano), Mr W. Darby (violin), Messrs J. On minings and Bates (cornets) and Mr A. Crovvtfter (hoboe). At about 10 p.m. the chairman of executive addressed the assemblage, stating that the evening was a pleasant those present, in-as-'inuob... as, apart from the amusement *to be derived, it marked the end of a strenuous campaign. The work had been hard—few who had entered upon it had thought to what extent they would be called upon—but they had the satisfaction of knowing that their efforts had met with the greatest success. Hard knocks had been given and received on occasions, but these were on the heat of the moment. Now, he felt sure, all realised that these could not be avoided under the circumstances. It was now sufficient to know that the county had done more than was expected of it. The sum collected would probably be about £7OO over the assessment of £8,500. (Applause.) Before concluding he said he had a pleasant duty to perform—that of presenting each queen with a bouquet. The latter were handsome indeed, the flowers and ribbons conforming to the battle color of each queen. As .queen of the county, Mrs Darby thanked the whole of her subjects. Mr P. Quinlan, as chairman of

the Green queen's committee, spoke of the manner in which the had subscribed to the and also the great done by Mr J Price and the secretary, Mr H. W. Smales. Few knew of the time Mr Price had put into the campaign, while the secretary had always been at his post. The two gentlemen mentioned had borne the heaviest of the work, and to them was due the thanks of the riding. Personally he was proud to live in a county which was full of charity. A vote was carried by acclamation. The chairman and secretary both replied, thanking the people for the vote, and expressing the opinion that they had but endeavored to do their duty. The M.C., Mr H. Rollett, who was assisted by Mr J. Pohlen during the evening, then announced the grand march. The queens were paired as follows: Mrs Darby with Mr J. Price; Miss Litchfield and Mr Smales ; Mrs Blennerhassett and Mr H. Rollet; Mrs Gould and Mr Quinlan ; Mrs Tong and Mr Elliott; Mrs Harding and Mr Harding. In each case the male partner was chairman of the queen's committee, with the exception of Mr Smales. During the evening songs were nicely rendered by Miss Herrick, Miss" Myra Ross (2) and Mr Barnett. The vocal items were greatly appreciated. Extra dances were played by Misses Blennerhassett and E, James. The committee deserve congratulations on the success which attended the evening. Everything was well arranged and consequently there was no hitch to spoil the function.
