ROLL OF HONOR.
Lieut Bertram Russell. General regret was expressed at Walton last week when the tidings of the death of Lieut. Bertram Russell was received. The telegram from the Defence department, sent to Mr W. McLean stated that Bert was killed in action on September 2nd. Lieut. Russell was born in Auckland but was educated in Melbourne. When about 14 years of age he returned to his native city, and later followed farming pursuits. He was for about • ten years, off and on, in the employ of Mr McLean. He enlisted as a driver in the Artillery and left New Zealand with the Main Body, fought all through the Gallipoli campaign and then went to France. He received a minor wound, and had shown such initiative that he was recommended for a commission, and sent back to New Zealand to be attached. He left again with the 34th reinforcements and arrived in Fiance on March 3rd seeing continual service until he received his fatal wounds on September 2nd. Bert Russell was very popular at Walton and was well-known in Auckland as a brilliant pigeon shot. He had no relatives in New Zealand.
