WAHAROA.

On Saturday evening, September 7th, at the conclusion of the Pictures, which for the past eight Saturday evenings have been held for Patriotic purposes Mr Phillips announced the winners of the various articles that had been guessed for:—fWristlet watch, Mr S. Whit worth; shawl, Mrs H. Kelso, of Matamata; hand-paint-ed cushion, Mr Quane, of Ngarua; doll, Miss Edna Lewis; trinket box, Mrs James Blyth. The jced cake, the weight of j which >as correctly»ffguessed by Mrs H. Walton and Mr A. K. Weeks, was handed in by the winners for sale.

A grand concert on Monday September 9th concluded the Queen Carnival Campaign. There was a bumper house and an enthusiastic reception greeted the several very popular performers from Rotorua. Hamilton, Waiuku, and Taihoa. Miss Hilda Nixon, "The lady at the piano " has always proved a big draw for any audience, and her items together with Miss Hall's beautiful contralto voice of such unique quality were amongst some of the chief features of the evening, Mr Tapper's humorous songs were well received and Gunner Rearder gave pleasing renderings of "Carnival" and "The Mighty Deep." Mr Edgar West, of Hamilton, kindly motored down a party of Hamilton artists, Messrs Fort, Watfon, and Macintosh, and it would be superfluous to remark that their various items created much mirthful enjoyment. The " Green Pierrots" consisting of Taihoa, Matamata and Walton* artists gave several bright and effective numbers, and Miss West, of Waiuku sang very sweetly the old favorite "When you come Home Dear," giving " Wake up " as an encore. The flower dance given by the school children on the Thursday afternoon was repeated on Monday when they again responded to an encore. Little Miss Joyce Noake's song, " Please give me a Penny, Sir," brought another 16s worth of i small coins at th* feet of the tiny maiden. DarbyV orchestra, consisting of Mesdamas Uarby and W. Ryan, and Messrs Darby and Cummings played two overtures " Monetral Vim," and " March Waikato" in their usual spirited and finished style, and altogether, the concert was one of the best ever held in the district. Mr W. Ryan, the concert secretary, Mr A. K. Weeks, and Mesdames Tong, Ryan are to be congratulated on the sueeess which crowned their efforts. Supper and dance eoncluded a most enjoyable programme. At the conclusion Mr Price, of Matamata, announced the result of the campaign. The Saturday night pictures concluded last week. No working had to be deducted from these evenings except the cost of the films, the hall and picture plant being lent by the hall trustees, volunteers supplying the music, and the operator, Mr S. Whitworth, giving his services gratis. Mrs James Blyth gave a progressive euchre party at her residence on Friday, 13th inst., in aid of local Red Cross funds. Mr and Mrs Seager Mason were the winners of the first prizes, whilst Miss E. Richards and Mr A. Scherer secured the " boobies." Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs James Thomson senr., Mr and Mrs Seager Mason, Mr and Mrs W. Ryan, Mrs Wade, Misses Malloy, Carroll, Richards, Casey, Scherer, Maxwell, and Messrs J. Ryan, A. K. Weeks, Rentoul, Casey, Wright and Scherer. The funds will benefit to the extent of nearly three pounds. Private Alphosne Scherer, of the 44th reinforcements, is home on final leave. Miss M. Malloy, of Peria, has been week-ending at Mrs J. Blyth's. Mr and Mrs D. Clow have returned to Waharoa.
