ASSAULT AT TIRAU.
Natives Fined. At the Matamata Magistrate's Court, on Friday, two natives, Brown Hinganui and Jack Tai, of Okoroiro, ware charged, before Mr W. G. Kenrick, S.M., the former with using obscene language" tIH-d .two _Tir.au residents, and Tai with assault. A witness stated that as he was leaving his place of business, Brown went up to him and used obscene language, using a most objectionable term. Witness struck the native. Another pakeha came up and the two natives challenged him; following up by one holding him and the other getting to work with his fists. Constable Murphy said the Maoris were very decent when sober, but lost control of their temper when drunk. Both accused pleaded guilty, Mr G. G. Bell, for them, expressing regret at the occurrence. He pointed out that although they had used the language, the first blow had been struck by one of the witnesses. The Magistrate lectured accused and stated that if Brown came before him on any similar charges in the future he would send him to gaol, and also issue a prohibition order against him. Brown was convicted and fined 20s on the charge of using obscene language, and 10s on the charge of assault. Tai was convicted and fined 20s on the charge of assault.
