A UNIQUE INCIDENT,
A Calf In Milk. A Kiwitea farmer has supplied an exchange with the following: "R 9 my pedigree Jersey heifer calf, which is in milk* The calf is just over six months old, and is giving good milk, and as much as one quarter of a gallon at a milking. Samples were carefully taken of the milk and were tested, showing a percentage of 7.4 butter fat. I first became aware of her being in milk on 2nd March last, and there is no doubt that she had been in milk some time before that. I consider the reason for this very unique condition is the fact that she seemed to mother another calf, somewhat older than herself, and allowed it to suck her. This fact, together with her splendid milking strain and exceptionally motherly instinct, seems to be the reason, in my opinion. I have a full sister of the calf in question, which is now under semi-official test as a junior two-year-old, and which produced the Department's requirement of 240.51 b. of butter-fat in just over six months, and this under very adverse circumstances. The heifer calf is my property, and I have reared her myself on skim milk from the separator, with no other feeding! She is still milking, although I am trying to dry her off. It will be interesting to see how she will turn out in the future under semi-official test."
