The Public Hall.
To the Editor. Sir, —A subject that has caused a great deal of discussion during the past few weeks is that of the management of tho Matamata Public hall. I understand that this hall was erected somo six or seven years ago, a portion of the cost being defrayed by public subscription, the balance being guaranteed to the bank by several of the citizens. I shall be glad if any of your readers can furnish through your columns the following information : (a) The amount of money owing to the bank on completion of the building. (b) The amount of money still owing to the bank. (o) The date of the last annual meeting. (d) The date of the last balance sheet. (e) The date of the next annual meeting. There seems to he a feverish desire on the part of the hall committee to pay off the bank overdraft, but why this unseemly haste ? Is the bank pressing for payment ? Personally, I would like to seo some money spent in catering for tho comfort of patrons hy providing a few tip-up chairs and altering the windows and doors so that they can be opened and shut as required; installing a decent box scene, and altering tho roof of the stago so that travelling companies may remove the Matamata Public hall from their black list, thereby increasing the income already derived from leasing. Another matter that requires to be remedied is the lighting apparatus, as during a dance or performance of any kind it is most annoying to be left in darkness about 9.30 p.m. In conclusion I have no hesitation in saying that the hall is not being 1 run on business lines, and it is high time that the building was taken over by the Town Board. Apologising for taking up so much of your valuable space. —1 am, etc., “ PRO BONO PUBLICO.”
