FOOTBALL.

EVSatasnata 12 v. ©kataia ®. The Matamata and Okauia teams again met on Saturday, victory going to the former, after a hard fought game, by three points. The echo of the referee’s whistle had hardly died away at the start of the game when the Okauia forwards got over to score their first try. The men from the snowy hills continued to press throughout the spell but could not add to their score. Early in the second quarter Matamata commenced to assert themselves, and Stewart was favored with an opportunity to pot. The kick was a good one that earned Matnmata four points. Okauia was compelled to force twice within as many minutes, but no further score resulted before halt time. The Okauia forwards put plenty of weight and energy into their efforts upon resumption, and their fast following up led to a try, as a result of a mistake by a Matamata three-quarter. The Matamata backs were slinging the ball about well, Donaldson Stewart and Waite especially playing well, and it was not long before they again put their team in the lead by a point, Stewart scoring a good try. Matamata had the best of the play in the early stages of the last spell and Donaldson who had been working like a Trojan ran through and then passed to Kneebone, who scored. The try was converted. Okauia, although now six points to the bad fought manfully, and they Were rewarded towards the close with a try by J. Marsh. The kick at goal failed. The credit of the game was due really to the Okauia men who were playing only their second game of the season. The Douglases (3) and Sutherland were the best of a lot of good workers. For Matamata Stewart, Waite, Donaldson and Les Connell stood out prominently. The forwards were not as good as usual, their main jpmission being a pronounced failure to “ pack round.” Mr W. Ruthe controlled the game. The following will represent Matamata in a match against Ohaupo on Saturday July 27th at Matamata: C. Stewart, F. Connell, Sims, Sutherland, Partridge, Kirk, Donaldson, J. Douglas, R. Radford, M. Scott. Emergencies, backs J. Wallace, H. Scott, forwards Fissendon, Marrow, Burnett.
