FOOTBALL.
Kereone 14, Matamata 9. The first challenge match of the season was played in Matamata on Saturday, between the above teams. The Kereone club selected several better men than those which played against Morrinsville recently, and made up a team of no mean order. Matamata drew upon several of its reserves. The scores were a fair indication of the strength of the teams, Kerecne men being slightly superior in all departments. At times the game was made open, and twice real spectacular scores were witnessed by the spectators —a try each for Kereone and Matamata. Kereone scored a penalty goal (Timmins) in the first place to be followed by a similar score by Matamata (Sutherland), Kereone followed with a try from J. Baker and later one from G. Baker (converted by Timmins). Matamata then scored through the agency of Sims; and in the last spell Holmes added additional points. "Jock" Mclntyre further increased Kereone's lead, the result being as above. For the winners Timmins, R. Johnson, Mortensen, J. Mclntyre, Baker (2) were the best; while the latter and Partridge (Matamata) were the pick of both teams. Both are worthy of better class football. Of Matamata, Cotter, Holmes, Sutherland, Harding and Stewart were the pick. Mr A. Mateer gave satisfaction as referee. After the match the teams were entertained at Stewart's tearooms, where complimentary speeches were made on each side. A return match will shortly be played in Morrinsville.
