SERVICE BOARD APPEALS.

Te Aroha Sitting. The second Military Service board (Messrs F. Earl, K.C. (chairman), F. Hockley and A. Rosser) commenced its monthly sitting at Te Aroha on Wednesday. Major H. H. Browne, N.Z.S.C., officer commanding No. 2 group, was in attendance as military representative. Oswald V. Adlum, farmer, Waharoa, asked that he be deferred for medical re-examina-tion, having met with an accident since last examination. The appeal committee of the Matamata Farmers' union suggested that appellant be granted sine die exemption as he was a useful producer. Adlum said he was farming 120 acres which he had held for two years. He had been engaged farming all his life. He had a herd of 40 cows. He is a married man with one child. —Sine die exemption was granted.

Leonard A. Orr, farmer, Walton, was reheard, as a soldier brother had lately returned invalided. Appellant said the brother was in worse health now than when he first returned, and is now in hospital at Rotorua. His was a shell-shock case, and there was no likelihood of him being able to replace appellant. Sine die exemption continued.

Michael Riorden, farmer, Putaruru, whose case had been deferred from an earlier sitting, announced that he had lately sold his farm. He only sought temporary leave. — He goes to camp on August 15th. Edmund D. White, farmer, Putaruru, said he had lately sold his farm and was adjusting his affairs, having taken a smaller farm in payment for the farm. He had been classed A, and is a single man. Oae brother in on active service and two others are married. —'Adjourned for three months. Stanley D. Maitland, farmer, Okoroire, claimed to be the last man on a farm of 170 acres. He took up the farm eight months ago, thinking married men would not be required for active service. He had been classed CI. The board said Maitland had taken a sporting chance, and was likely to suffer for it. The, appeal would be adjourned until the August sitting. Sidney B. Greenbury. farmer, Okoroire, alleged hardship, and gave details of his farming operations and financial obligations. He had tried to sell his property without success. The board said reports were favorable, and it did not wish to inflict undue hardship. The case would be adjourned pending further inquiry. Lancelot Hitchings, farmer, Walton, withdrew his appeal.
